Biden hopes to beat the odds
Delaware Sen. Joe Biden said Friday the Iowa Caucus won't be won on sound bites and million-dollar ad campaigns.

"You guys are too smart for that," he said. "You are the single most informed group of voters in the country. You and New Hampshire are the only thing that stands between a Democratic process and an election that is bought."

"Iowans are still trying to make up their minds about each of us," Biden said. "My hurdle is viability. Do I have the capacity to win? All I have to judge by is the response from audiences when I speak. Just like today, I spoke to 30 people and at least a third of them came up and said they've change their minds or are rethinking their choice."

Case in point, Wadi Shah, 17, of Fort Madison.

Shah, an Obama supporter, attended a Biden rally earlier in the day in Fort Madison. He arrived curious about Biden and walked away impressed.

"I am kind of a Barack boy. I was pretty interested in learning about him (Biden) and seeing what his background was," Shah said. "I don't know what I am going to do. He's a powerful guy. He's got a lot of people behind him, and he's got a lot of background behind him."

1. When it came to Dubya, people voted with their emotions rather than their heads.

That should be a lesson to us. The truth is that Obama has very little to show for all his eloquent talk and his celebrity endorsements. And this is hardly a time to try out an unknown quantity. That would be counter-intuitive. It would mean that the lesson of 2000 has been lost on us.
