How Did Keyes Get on Stage?

By Sarah Wheaton

The exclusion of Representative Dennis J. Kucinich of Ohio and Mike Gravel from the Democratic debate on Thursday stung those candidates and their supporters. But what made the situation puzzling was the presence on Wednesday at the Republicans’ version of The Des Moines Register debate of Alan Keyes, who had until then been nearly invisible in this campaign.

But Mr. Keyes met The Register’s full criteria for participation. He filed as a presidential candidate with the Federal Election Commission, and he received 2 percent in The Register’s poll in October. Participants needed to show at least 1 percent.

Mr. Keyes also met the requirement of having a campaign office and a “paid campaign staff representative to perform full-time campaign duties” in Iowa as of Oct. 1.

But no phone number could be found for the office in Lohrville, Iowa, that Mr. Keyes listed in his application to The Register. Even the state’s Republican leaders said Thursday that they had not known it existed.

If Andy's still alive, this could be his new alias.

2. DAMN IT!
I have called and called that $&#*@(&% EXCUSE for a newspaper, trying to find out where Keyes' mythical office is.

They successfully screwed Kucinich and hardly anyone here gave a crap. And several hateful assholes here indulged in calling him names, like bratty ugly school kids.

I'm so fucking disappointed...

:grr:

39. Yes
Save that there was one spam poster that slammed one of the main threads that went after that damned newspaper. The person in question hung out long enough to put up 42 posts bashing anyone that challenged the paper and spewed a lot of lies about Kucinich.

I called her on her odd post frequency and got my sub-thread deleted for my trouble. It's nice to know that trolls and sock-puppets are so thoroughly encouraged here.

10. You mean at the Des Moines register or here on DU?
There are lots of people here who don't seem to give a shit how unfairly he's treated.

Then there's also the kind who actively HATE him and call him names... but then they seem to call other DUers names too... infantile and pathetic, considering they're possibly adults, but there you go.

As usual... flock to the bullshit, ignore the substance.

It is much easier to just avoid substance altogether, though... can't argue with that.

12. I wish the paper would explain itself. I do think an injustice has
been done to Kucinich given that no one can even find Keyes' office, but I'd also like Kucinich to explain why he thought Iowa didn't matter enough.

I really like Kucinich and his platform, but he's not without fault.

whom I was referred to... and just asked someone who answers their phone. She said she'd have to call me back... computer trouble.

I'll let you know what I find out.

Sure is hard trying to find an answer to this question.

Pretty odd, huh?

I'm not given to conspiracy theories.

Whether you agree with him or not, DK always makes for a more intersting debate. For that reason alone he should have been there.

20. Thanks, not having Dennis in the debate has removed a few
unpleasant topics from being addressed in front of a national audience.

---Single-payer health care

---Accountability/impeachment

---Draft Iraq Oil Law which facilitates foreign companies in the control and profit of Iraq's natural resources.

---Past voting records of other candidates which might be inconsistent with their current stance on a variety of issues. Not sure about Richardson, but almost every candidate given the chance to vote on an issue voted together, except the candidate who was just excluded from this debate.

http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Spurned_by_major_newspapers_Dem_Congressman_1214.html

Spurned by major newspapers, Dem Congressman (Wexler) takes 'impeach Cheney' appeal to Web

"As the House Judiciary Committee continues to refuse any action on proposals to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney, three of that panel's members tried to take their case to influential op-ed pages of the nation's largest newspapers.

They were turned down by every one -- including the New York Times, Washington Post and Miami Herald -- so now one of the lawmakers has taken his campaign to the Internet...

"The truth is the mainstream media have no interest in this issue," Wexler said Friday.

"They have bought into the notion that impeachment hearings are outside the bounds of what the congress ought to be doing," the six-term Congressman elaborated during a conference call Friday..."

23. There are no excuses, except for the fact that the corporations
do not favor that alternative. Dennis was told as much by the 2000 and 2004 Democratic Platform Committees. We get less than what we vote for, so it will be interesting.

lots of DUers jumped on the "he's a joke" bandwagon and still don't seem to care too much now that it's been proven that he was indeed unfairly excluded.

As for me I think it's important that Americans hear about Medicare for All at every debate. :)
