Should the POTUS be replaced by a triumvirate or pro-consul?
It would one way to get away from the there can be only one reality. the position of Vice-President would be eliminated under my system.

4. A better idea would be to change the way the VP is chosen.
The executive branch would have much more self control if the candidate who came in second in the electoral college was the VP. The old way...

11. But then there's always the possibility of assassination.
With the current system, if a person from party A shoots the President from party B, that doesn't help party A because the President has chosen his successor (although if the Speaker is of party A then theoretically you could get what you wanted). But if they're of different parties, you risk a coup.
