Nader critics: How did you feel about Ross Perot's candidacy?
Let me begin by saying that I'm not a Nader supporter.

However, I saw him on MTP this morning, and he uttered the "I" word: IMPEACHMENT.

He did say some dumb things, such as Al Gore would have invaded Iraq, but on the whole, he was pretty anti-*.

That can only help us.

In the same way that Perot helped Bill Clinton.

Perot attacked Bush Sr. unmercifully, plus siphoned some of his votes.

1. Perot was no spoiler
Edited on Sun Feb-22-04 05:05 PM by ButterflyBlood
not only because he took votes away from both candidates equally, but because he actually had a chance. I saw an analysis that showed if Perot had continued to poll the same way he did before dropping out for the first time, he would've won in an electoral landslide, winning every state west of the Mississippi River except Nebraska, and the midwest and most of the northeast leaving Clinton only with Arkansas, DC, Maryland, West Virginia and New York, and Bush with most of the south except Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Florida, and Nebraska.

18. Here is an analysis...
Book mark it for when people claim Perot cost Bush the white house in 92.

2. Why not ask this question to Nader supporters instead?
Are you asking if Democrats should support a candidate who history shows us can help the Republicans win?

Why not ask the people who would be helping Bush, rather than those who are trying to beat Bush?

16. Nader will take ZERO votes from Bush
He has the potential to take many from the democrats. Take a very close look at who Nader attracts ... NOT the Perot factor here -- in fact, just the opposite.

3. The Electorate is divided almost 50/50. 3rd Party Destroys Side he splits
NADER SPLITS THE LEFT. HE DESTROYS THE LEFT.

5. Well Midori, I would agree with you but for your second
to the last sentence:
"In the same way that Perot helped Bill Clinton."

Yes, Perot appealed to disgruntled Republicans and they shot themselves in the foot and that helped Bill Clinton.

Not so with Nader, and that is NOT who he is attempting to appeal to.

8. In reading Josh Marshall's predictions
most Dems/Greens who voted for him will not do so again.

Nader has a whole bunch of people pissed at him -- people on the left.

10. I saw that
But it doesn't change the fact that Nader announced within days of Dean dropping and expects to capitalize on the emotional response some of Dean's supporters have had.

11. I was a Dean supporter
and I can't imagine they would vote for him.

It is a strange world, tho.

13. I was not against Dean until after his last MTP appearance
when it was clear to me that not only was he self destructing, he was doing it in a manner that Nader did in 00.

and there are a few threads that explain why some will vote for him here today by the usual Dems are responsible for Bush advocates.

I am not saying the party did not strategize poorly ..in fact they did...but anyone in the party short of Zell Miller is head and shoulders above this dangerous regime.

17. I did some checking, and one thing I want to clear up
The timing of his announcement virtually coincides with the same day Nader announced his candidacy in 2000.

6. I welcome and encourage anyone to run for President... but
if they lie and distort the facts/truth I plan to call them on it. If they are hypocrites, I plan to call them on it, if they have NADA experience in public office, I plan to call them on it.

That includes the Democrats, Republicans, Nader and or Perot.

12. It Pleased Me Greatly, Ma'am

Because there was no question he would draw more votes from the Republicans than from the Democratic Party. This is all to the good, and it was indeed high among the reasons President Clinton won the '92 election.

The same reasoning leads Republicans today to rejoice in the actions of Wrecker Nader. It does not matter if he mouths the word impeachment, or even criticizes the current administration. First, impeachment is impossible in a Republican Congress, and if the criminals of the '00 Coup are defeated at the polls, there will be no need or call for it. Second, because Wrecker Nader continues to cling to his "not a dime's worth of difference" line, he will certainly concentrate a good deal of his fire against the Democratic nominee, doing all he can to blur the differences between the parties in the popular mind. He will receive assistance from the media in this, as his presence plays up the conflict angle they delight in. Any criticism of the Republicans Wrecker Nader utters will be coupled with criticism of the Democratic nominee, and this will receive just as wide a play as the other, if not more so.

The solution to this situation, of course, is for all on the left to reject this wretch; to circulate and sign no ballot petitions, to donate no monies or time, and to with-hold votes from the wrecker. This reptile has no power but what people decide to lend to him, and he should receive nothing but ostracization and scorn. That is kinder treatment than he deserves.

15. That Is My Earnest Desire As Well, Ma'am
And in furtherance of it, there is not one of the candidates for the Democratic nomination, active still or retired, it would trouble me in the least to vote for in the fall.

It does not seem to me that Wrecker Nader will receive many votes, or even be on too many state ballots. There are really only a very few, even here, who seem to be falling for his bid to assist the criminals of the '00 Coup as an expression of left zeal. There cannot be too many people dim enough to make that same mistake twice.
