Where was Oprah in 2003?
She is now chiding others for not speaking out against the war when it began. Um...where the hell were you, Oprah? What chutzpah...

presume to know why Oprah does what she does or votes the way she votes. Nor do I really care. I'm just happy she has such faith in Obama and am getting there myself, though there are several Dems I'd be happy to see win (and one, not so much ;) )

10. Dating Osama Bin Laden on the side, maybe? Who knows? Who cares?
She ISN'T a politician. Clearly not, if she's saying shit like that.

For whatever reason, be it local Chicago loyalty, the 'blackness' thing, unrequited attraction, or even sincere belief, she's decided to use what she's got, her clout, to support this guy.

It's her choice.

In America, money is speech--the Supremes have said so. Fame, apparently, is speech as well. The playing field is never going to be level. We just have to factor these things in, and decide for ourselves.

Frankly, people who vote for Obama because they just "looooooove" Oprah are fucking idiots. But if she gets a few ga-ga fans into the venue who are there to see HER, and who decide to vote for Obama after hearing him speak, well, she's done her job. And those people have made an informed decision.

The downside of the whole OPRAH!!!!! thing is that she's eclipsing the candidate a bit, it seems. It's a two-edged sword, these celebrity endorsements....

The problem is that we have someone who is not even a Democrat playing a huge role in who our nominee is. This is almost as bad as if Chuck Norris was endorsing Obama...

38. Alan Keyes isn't "Local"==One more time, APIL.
They shipped Keyes in from MARYLAND after the GOP candidate imploded when his wife started telling everyone what a cretinous, sexually perverse and cruel bastard he was.

And Keyes ran against...OBAMA. The LOCAL guy. The guy who lives where Oprah lives.

So why would she support the out-of-towner? Your question makes no sense.

A cite, to forestall the disbelieving demands for 'proof:'

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/08/04/politics/main634113.shtml

Keyes, a Maryland resident who also twice failed in runs for the U.S. Senate in that state, spent much of his speech discussing his deliberations over running in Illinois.

"I will spend a good deal of my time listening to the people of this state," he said. "I might not know the streets yet and the neighborhoods and all the things that go to make up the everyday life of the people.

42. It doesn't matter WHY. I know you think it does, but it doesn't.
She could be supporting him because her best sexual experience was with someone with HUGE ears. She could be supporting him because she lost a bet with someone--OK, Opie, heads, Hillary, tails, Obama...and if the coin lands on its side, you're out there stumping for Gravel...Bwahahahahhaha!!!!!

She could be supporting him because she likes the look of him. She could be supporting him because she likes his policies. She could be supporting him because she secretly wants to "get whitey!"

It. Does. Not. Matter.

In America, you are permitted to support someone for any reason at all, even STUPID reasons, if you'd like. Look at the people who support George Bush. No one told THEM they "couldn't." And by that logic, neither you, me, nor anyone else can tell Obama's supporters that they have to pass some sort of litmus test to be "allowed" to support him.

20. I just don't agree. Oprah has a right to use her clout if she wants. That's the American way.
Springsteen did Kerry; Streisand does Clinton, Ani DeFranco does Kucinich (and he never misses a fucking concert, either! When he SHOULD BE in NH or IA, he's in TN and NY, tapping his toes...!).

You don't have to be a Democrat to endorse a Democrat. There's no "rule."

It is what it is. If she'd endorsed your candidate, you'd be thrilled.

I don't have a candidate yet, so I don't get quite so riled. So far, Obama isn't my top pick mainly because of that McClurkin shit (I have friends and relatives who were crushed, and I don't like seeing my friends and relatives so grievously hurt)--I may hold my nose and vote for him when it comes down to it, but I may not, either. Yesterday, I was liking me some Richardson, tomorrow, it could be Edwards or Clinton or even Gabby Joe Biden. There's something I like in most of them, actually.

But it could come down to a coin toss...all I know is I'm voting for a Democrat.

Do we know she stayed home? Is she not registered to vote?
Perhaps she didn't want to alienate her viewers while she was building her HARPO empire.

Isn't she getting ready to quit that stupid show, already? Perhaps now she feels she can safely get partisan.

She's got her pile of cash; she probably figures since that relationship with that goofy looking "boyfriend" didn't pan out too well, she may as well make her lasting mark on the world now--be a real mover and shaker, beyond telling people what to read and what to wear.

She's 'peeing on the tree' because she believes that This Is Her Time. This is Her Moment.

She wants to see her name in the index of the history books about President Obama--it's something money alone cannot buy, you see. You know, Winfrey, O. Endorsement p. 13; campaigning for, pp. 43-4, 58, 182; Victory Tour, pp. 233-8; White House redecorating. p 301; backlash/reelection loss--influence on, p 512...

I'm only half-joking there. She needs to guard against over-exposure, because while a little bit packs a big punch, a lot just gets to be too much, IMO.

55. Whenever Johnny Carson would tell a Lincoln joke (Other than that, how was the play? e.g.)
he'd get that little 'nervous titter' from the audience, and he'd give that look, and say "Too soon?"

I'm so friken old I grew up in that "too soon" era!! I 'get' the humor but I'm not so jaded that it doesn't produce that "Whoa!" factor.

Hell, when I see Cartoon Lincoln and Lincoln Who Sells Sleeping Pills With a Beaver (or some stupid animal) I still get faint twinges of "Too-Soon-itis!"

It's a generational thing, I think.

56. Hypocrisy is NOT a bar to endorsing a candidate, though. You're getting pissed about something
that isn't important and doesn't matter.

Even if she were a hypocrite, and I am not suggesting she is, she has every right to support whosoever she pleases. And if she is a hypocrite, it will shine through in her verbiage. Or maybe not. But she has the right to back the candidate of her choice.

Hypocrites are not disenfranchised in America.
