Chelsea’s Iowa Debut

DES MOINES – With Oprah Winfrey headed here on Saturday to campaign for Senator Barack Obama, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton brought a surprise guest of her own: Chelsea Clinton.

It was Ms. Clinton’s debut on the presidential campaign trail, smiling broadly as she walked into Palmer’s Deli a few steps behind her mother for a breakfast photo opportunity. She shed her coat and immediately began shaking hands and mingling with Iowa supporters who were seated among the diners.

“Chelsea, delighted to meet you,” said Julia Martinusen, 49, who signed up as a Clinton supporter in recent weeks. “I was just wondering where you’d been.”

“I’m happy to be here,” Ms. Clinton replied.

I'm glad to see that Chelsea's joining her mom out on the campaign trail. I met Chelsea a few days before the '04 election, when she was out campaigning for Kerry/Edwards. She was very sweet and down to earth and I imagine she'll be an effective campaign tool for her mom.

I wonder why the campaign didn't do this sooner.

It might be too little too late.

Don't be surprised if they film a commercial starring Chelsea.

6. I think Chelsea really enjoys her anonymity

since she's been an adult, she's pretty much flown under the radar. I imagine she always planned to come out and stump for her mom, but not until the end.

she's never given an interview. Her dad has said she's interested in politics, but doubts she'd run herself. Career-wise, she hasn't shown any inclination to do so.

22. That would be nice. I've always hoped she'd get involved in public service in some way.

she's very intelligent and has a lot of poise. I think she could make an important contribution to our country, but I often wonder if her desire for privacy stands in the way.

30. bill was remarking the other day about the work she does with the cllinton global intiative

foundation, so, yes, she does a lot of public service work.

but she does them very quietly. The only time she really makes public appearances is when she does things with the NYC Ballet (which I believe she is on the board of).

You know, in general I stayed away the Guiliani media. But I read that Vanity Fair article posted in GD last week. It's no wonder why his kids don't want to vote for him. I knew that he tried to kick his wife out of Gracie Manshion, but I didn't know the details really. :wow:

It's nice when the candidates are able to bring their grown kids out on the campaign trail - Cate Edwards is a great representative for her dad, and the Kerry girls did a great job on behalf of their dad as well.

19. Yep. I met her then. She was with Caroline Kennedy, Vanessa Kerry, Karenna Gore, and Cate Edwards.nt

They came to FL a couple of days before the '04 elections. It was a surprise appearance, too - we had been told that Ben Affleck and Vanessa Kerry would be there, but then we got there and were told that the others would be coming, too. It was Chelsea's first stump speech, and it was a special treat. I chatted with her afterwards and she was lovely.

I know Caroline does a lot of philanthropic work. I don't know whether Chelsea does or not, but I can easily see her following Caroline's example.

Isn't if refreshing to see a young girl brought up by responsible parents. Parents who had trouble in their marriage but managed to raise their child right. AND I am making a comparison to the bush's girls. Two goodness knows whats. Allowed to run wild and have no morals. I guess you now know which party really has family values.

Chelsea is a lovely young woman who grew up as the child of Bill and Hillary.

Who wouldn't want to hang out and have a few drinks with her? She probably has the most interesting stories, especially being a teenager in the WH.

I met Chelsea briefly once - we only exchanged a few sentences but she seemed like the kind of person I'd want to be friends with, you know? There was something very calm and sweet and down-to-earth about her.

Although I enjoy watching Oprah's show from time to time, she seems like she'd be way too self-centered to be the kind of person I'd want to be friends with.
