where was Oprah in 2000?
This post was inspired by the "Where was Oprah in 2004" post.

In 2000, she was doing this:

1. No shit. That's why I cannot figure out why anyone cares what Oprah
thinks or who she supports.

And it ain't a race thing no matter how anyone would like to make it one.

68. She DID endorse Arnold
Arnold and Maria are personal friends of Oprah. Maria is one of her best friends. Oprah didn't just have Arnold on her show, that would imply she remained neutral, she didn't, it was an hour long commercial for Arnold's candidacy. One quote I remember is "All I know is a man who's as great of a father as Arnold is, would have to make a great governor too." That's an endorsement.

in 2000. Obviously, all these years of the Bush administration and admiration for a local political light moving up in the world has spurred her to further action.

Nice theory. Too bad she voted for Jesse Jackson in 1988 and that kills the theory. What motivated her to vote for a progressive like Jackson in 1988? Why did that disappear for the next two decades?

Edited on Sat Dec-08-07 12:04 PM by Progress And Change
What inspired Oprah to vote in a primary in 1988 and then disappear from politics for two decades? She was nowhere during the gulf wars, 1992, impeachment, 2000, the selection after the 2000 vote, the lead-up and aftermath of the second Iraq war, 2004, the 2006 elections. She could vote in 1988 and then goes full throttle for Obama in 2008. Yet nothing from 1988-2008 mattered to her? That suggests she has no real political beleifs and certainly is no Democrat...

and she hasn't given "equal time" to others.

Kind of blows your "Oprah's been even handed" argument out of the water. Now go watch Arnold's appearance on her show and see how she practically fellated him. Then look into how Oprah supports the uber-freeper Dr Phil.

9. If Oprah believes in equal time,
why did she have Arnold on her show but refused to have Gray Davis, the legally elected governor of California who was recalled shortly afterward?

California has a very undemocratic system where if you have enough money you can pay people to collect signatures to put anything you want on a ballot. The rich Repubs put the recall on the ballot. Then the TV stations played Arnold movies night and day. Oprah and Leno and right wing radio nutcasters had ARnold on their shows (mucho free publicity) but not Gray. The courts upheld the legality of all this free publicity for Arnold. The stations did not have to give equal time to Gray Davis.

And why was Gray Davis unpopular? Because Enron held back electricity and the state had lots of blackouts. Cheney refused to allow any help for the state. Do I think this was a REpub plot? You bet I do. To this day, we don't know who Cheney was talking to at this time. The courts have refused to make Cheney tell.

Neither did Leno, who did have Arnold.

Of course, we Dems were upset. But the courts said that Oprah and Leno and the right wing radio people did NOT have to give equal time.

I had just moved to California and was bitterly disappointed in the recall.

By the way, people said that OPrah gave this free publicity to Arnold because she was friends with Maria, Arnold's wife.

Gore bantered with Winfrey as he admired her ruby-red stiletto-heel boots, recalled how both he and Winfrey were young reporters in Nashville during the same time, and when Winfrey asked him if he is tired of critics calling him stiff, Gore chuckled and replied, "They're going to say something, so compared to the alternatives...."

By promoting Obama, she is asking her supporters to trust her and buy the product she is selling, after she spent 7 years not looking out for anyone but herself.

To pretend otherwise is disingenuous.

Oprah is acting in self interest and by doing so is not to be trusted at all.

Have you been to Oprahs message boards? There is NO politics section at all. She obviously doesn't want discussion of other candidates over there. I haven't been keeping up with it much, but it looks like Oprah is alienating her viewers by supporting Obama so publicly:

Edited on Sun Dec-09-07 06:03 AM by VarnettaTuckpocket
Donahue's show was just like hers for the housewives, but he chose to give it a lot of political content, just as she could choose to discuss politics on her show. And Donahue is of course a staunch liberal and would've had no problem siding unequivocally against Bush. Oprah's more concerned with not offending her conservative viewers, than she is about Bush's destruction of our country.
