The end of Huckabee?...Wanted to to isolate AIDS patients, limit funding for AIDS research and cure
Edited on Sat Dec-08-07 11:15 AM by TeamJordan23
There goes his compassionate conservative strategy to win over Independendts and some moderate Repubs. I would think the Repubs are smarter than to elect someone with these viewpoints for the general election. But I could be wrong.

Huckabee wanted to isolate AIDS patients

By ANDREW DeMILLO, Associated Press Writer

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Mike Huckabee once advocated isolating AIDS patients from the general public, opposed increased federal funding in the search for a cure and said homosexuality could "pose a dangerous public health risk."

As a candidate for a U.S. Senate seat in 1992, Huckabee answered 229 questions submitted to him by The Associated Press. Besides a quarantine, Huckabee suggested that Hollywood celebrities fund AIDS research from their own pockets, rather than federal health agencies.

"If the federal government is truly serious about doing something with the AIDS virus, we need to take steps that would isolate the carriers of this plague," Huckabee wrote.

"It is difficult to understand the public policy towards AIDS. It is the first time in the history of civilization in which the carriers of a genuine plague have not been isolated from the general population, and in which this deadly disease for which there is no cure is being treated as a civil rights issue instead of the true health crisis it represents."

1. This will hurt him in a general election, but being dumb is a plus among right-wingers
Good news for Democrats, for this gives us one more issue to attack him on.

5. I don't know if this necessarily hurts him
After all, people who genuinely care about AIDS and trying to find a cure aren't really the GOP's primary base. I think many rethugs would prefer to just let people with AIDS die, as they continue to think that it's still a "gay" disease.

to tout Huckabee's AIDS bigotry as a more likely scenario than this issue hurting Huckabee in the primary.

THe only reason any of them have had a lead is because the others are more disliked.

No pride over there. Just embarassment.

Hey GOP- So long, farewell!

12. With his base, helps him more than hurts him but I would LOVE to
see him nominated. He would be weak in general election. Ironically, the only one who wouldn't, given all that has transpired in the past several weeks, is McCain, which may lead to his coming back. Hope not.
