Forward to 1:34...

I forgot to mention in the original post that he also believes Obama is beatable.

1. That's awesome.
I would love to finally have a true progressive candidate who knows how to appeal to Republicans too.

2. he appeals to them because he is the most right-wing...
Just like Lieberman appealed to them in 2004...

28. I do find Obama more "right wing" than the others - but he is no Lieberman and I'd support him over
any GOPer.

not a true progressive, although he apparently has many fooled.

9. You're mistaking him for longstanding DLC member, Hillary. Obama is not and has never been DLC.
In fact, the National Journal rated Obama as the most liberal of all the Democratic presidential candidates.

12. Sorry, his organizational affiliations are of no interest to me.
Edited on Sat Dec-08-07 04:33 AM by Harvey Korman
I can read his policies, and I can see the way he operates. He may be a smooth talker, but he's already shown a willingness to pander and to talk out of both sides of his mouth when he gets caught doing it. Hillary might be accused of "saying anything to get elected," but Obama's solution is saying nothing while sounding good. Lull the crowd with lofty visions, and you'll never have to answer for concrete ideas. You don't need to be a DLC'er to be a "centrist," and in fact it's been convenient for Obama to disguise himself as a progressive simply by saying he's for "change" without offering much of it. In fact, his entire slogan-based candidacy is built on sophomoric, touchy-feely notions of togetherness that completely misapprehend the moment we're living in. He's certainly no threat to the health insurance or coal industries, or to the many people who believe our government should be more "faith-based."

Sorry, you can have Lieberman's protege--I'm not buying the hype.

19. What facts did you give me?
You brandished the term "DLC" like a magic word that would end all debate.

And btw, Hillary is rated as a "hardcore liberal" by sites like On the Issues. The painful truth is that for all intents and purposes, when you strip away all the nitpicking over this statement or that vote, Hillary and Barack are almost indistinguishable, policy-wise, in the most critical areas. Of course, you would never admit that because to do so would spoil the illusion fueling your support of Obama's candidacy.

20. Obama is way more liberal than Clinton, whose "conservative voting score" is > 2x that of Obama's
Edited on Sat Dec-08-07 05:04 AM by ClarkUSA
National Journal rankings are widely respected. Do you even know their methodology?

Link: http://nationaljournal.com/voteratings/sen/lib_cons.htm?o1=lib_composite&o2=desc

And any website who says Hillary is a hardcore liberal must be run by freepers.

One big difference between Obama and Hillary: one is a neocon warmonger with the votes to prove it and the other one isn't.

21. On the Issues is a non-partisan group run by academics.
Edited on Sat Dec-08-07 05:25 AM by Harvey Korman
They actually catalogue candidates' positions in various areas rather than merely generating an opaque numerical score.

Never mind.

Do yourself a favor, next time you have some free time, instead of swooning over Obama's speechifying about "change you can believe in" on youtube, go to barackobama.com and read his actual proposals, in long form (PDF), on at least three major areas (say, Iraq, energy policy, and health care). Then go to hillaryclinton.com, and do the same. Compare them carefully. Then, when you're undoubtedly shocked and dismayed to learn how similar they actually are, come back here and give a better argument for why Obama should be the top contender. I would even accept an answer like "I just think he'll be the most likeable to the greatest number of voters." But don't try and convince me that Obama is a risk-taker and a progressive.

Or, don't. And continue to defend your candidate by repeating irrelevant claims about other candidates ("Hillary is a neocon warmonger!") and challenging the intellectual integrity of anyone who dares question the false conceit (Obama=new, "outside the beltway"; other candidates=old, establishment, business as usual) on which he's built his campaign.

BTW, I'm a Kucinich supporter, so you don't have to tell me about real progressives who have taken real risks to promote liberal policies. Dennis has been walking the walk for decades. :patriot:

33. You are very optimistic
You are wrong to think an examination of the facts will result in their coming to a rational conclusion. In a thread last night, a poster did just that and came away saying Obama's plan was better because it addressed cost cutting, chronic diseases, and tort reform while Clinton's did not. When I quoted from the Clinton plan showing that her plan did address those issues in the same way, the poster claimed that Obama's was still better because he had "broad goals" while Clintons were "detailed steps"

There is no talking sense to some people

26. Policy-Wise, Obama Knows What It Means to Grant Authority to Invade Iraq
Policy-wise, Obama has openly said - despite a real possibility of media ridicule - that he will make it his goal to disarm ALL nuclear weapons.

Policy-wise, he is not stupid enough to suggest that a nuclear assault on a handful of terrorists in a populated area is "on the table." Great way to win the hearts and minds of the moderate Muslim world.

Face it, Clinton is a hawk and she relishes that title. She has never apologized for her vote because she doesn't want to be seen as "weak." My biggest fear is what she would do as President to appear "tough" and how many lives it would cost.

Policy-wise, she has also run one of the most secretive and vindictive campaigns in modern history. Hardly recommends her to follow one of the most secretive and vindictive Executive Branches in modern history.

34. Actually, he doesn't
He seems to think a non-binding resolution can authorize war. He also seems to think that voting to fund the war is not an approval of the war.

Nuclear disarmament has been a part of the dem party platform. Not controversial in any way.

Obama suggested using nukes on Pakistan, which instigated riots in Pakistan. Great way to win the hearts and minds of the moderate Muslim world

Face it, Obama is a coward who talks out of both sides of his mouth. He pretends he is a dove while talking about dropping nukes "in the mountains between Pakistan and Afghanistan", a mythical land.

23. His subtle reasoning, unstated but definitely out there, is that white America won't vote for the
black dude. That's why RightwingNUT Tancredo is so "enthused" about Obama. He and those like him are counting on the "Harold Ford Factor" where the black candidate needs a fifteen point lead to break even in a race with a large percentage of white voters.

I'm surprised he didn't call him a credit to his race, too. If Obama is the nominee, you are going to see more race baiting coming out of the GOP than a Theodore Bilbo campaign.

30. Look, my candidate is totally dismissed because of his short stature and "elfin" appearance
and people talk about these qualities as though they're legitimate reasons not to elect someone.

I'm not saying things like that should matter, but in this country, unfortunately, they do. It sucks, but it's the reality we're living in.

11. Translation: Tancredo thinks Obama is our weakest candidate, and will lose to any Repub nominee.
Of course, Tancredo is an amazing IDJIT who was put in place
by a political machine beyond the understanding of his tiny,
greedy little brain.

I'm no Obama fan, but I honestly think that he could beat any
of the Repubs out there if he just stays the course and avoids
any major gaffes or scandals.

He could just keep quiet and let the USA vote for that "(D)"
after his name. That right there is a 55/45 victory.
