Biden makes statement on the destroyed torture tapes -
Sen. Biden, On CIA’s Destroyed Torture Tapes: “This Administration’s Actions Violate Federal Law”
December 7th, 2007 by Erin Medlicott
Dec. 7: Today’s New York Times reported today that the CIA “destroyed videotapes in 2005 that documented the interrogation of two al-Qaeda operatives in the agency’s custody.” The tapes were destroyed “in the midst of Congressional and legal scrutiny about its secret detention program, according to current and former government officials.”

Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Joe Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued this response:

“This is another troubling example of the Bush Administration’s lawless behavior, that only serves to undermine our credibility at home and abroad. The Administration’s actions also appear to violate federal law. Obstructing justice and making false statements to an official investigation cannot be condoned by our government.

“I urge my colleagues in Congress to approve the National Security with Justice Act, legislation I proposed to prohibit extreme interrogation techniques. The Act also protects the brave men and women of our intelligence services, who are on the front lines in the war on terror, by providing unambiguous guidance regarding what is permissible under U.S. and international law.

“When we equivocate about torture, we are not only morally wrong, but we undermine our own credibility. We also weaken the international coalitions necessary to effectively combat terrorism, fuel terrorist recruitment, and place American soldiers, intelligence officers, and civilians in jeopardy.”

1. There is no war on terror, Joe
and because you insist that there is, I cannot support you as a presidential candidate.

7. No shit!........Why do dems buy into that bullshit?
It's almost as infuriating as hearing dems say that the Iraqis need to "step up to the plate".

We fucking destroyed and are occupying their country, you fucking assholes! Dems are the ones that need to step up to the plate and do something about these war criminals.

Still, ixion does make a good point in response #1. No torture! And no phony "War on Terror." You can't make war on a tactic any more than you can on "drugs."

13. Biden is not one of Bush's favorite people
and we know how Bush goes off in private with his foul mouth. Biden's ears must be ringing on a daily basis.

21. Yup, and it didn't help when Biden threatened Bush with impeachment
Edited on Sat Dec-08-07 05:38 PM by lyonn
if he used force against Iran. That was my favorite threat by Joe. Just had some young guys, ages approx. 21, who have a Marine friend stationed at Camp Pendleton that said he wouldn't be home for x-mas since they were on High Alert and leaves were canceled. Have no idea if this means everyone on base or what. Bush/cheney don't scare easy do they? Don't even know when the alert was issued, but that is scary shit.

Edited cause it needed it....

23. What does high alert mean?
I searched the web last nite and couldn't find a clue. It may not be that big a deal since this marine mentioned it. Does it mean that they might be returning to Iraq sooner than expected, or Afghanistan? Iran is heavy on my mind tho??? Maybe someone could clarify this. We were in high alert months prior to invading Iraq according to a old newspaper account that I discovered last nite.

8. I admire Biden for what he has been doing re Bush --- facing him and warning him ---
I LOVE the warning about invading Iran . .
even if it does kind of acknowledge that we couldn't stop him beforehand---!!!

It almost makes me wish Bush would try it --- !!!

I M P E A C H --- !!!

We need some impeach buttons --- maybe I'll make that suggestion to the Kucinich campaign ---
maybe Cindy Sheehan, too --- ???

12. That's funny - I had the same thought about wishing Bush would try -
but then I realized what I was thinking :P

With all the crap coming out from this administration these days, I think impeachment is going to be inevitable.

used throughout Bush's "war". It's clear to me, he was talking about in Iraq. He specifically said "frontlines". To me, that means in Iraq.

17. What theater. I don't see anyone willing to play Oliver North or John Poindexter. Who's
gonna get cast as John Dean and Deep Throat?

"lawless behavior" = "crimes and misdemeanors." A double-feature in one lifetime. Who'da thunk it.
