For me, the "Politics of Hope" is a statement that we can fix the problems we face as Americans. It's a promise not to get bogged down in the same old fights and no-win compromises. I'm a gardening nut, and the simple statement* by the Obama campaign that he will assist farmers to convert to organic methods while penalizing the factory farms that dump raw sewage into our watersheds shows me the guy is thinking ahead about what really matters. That's just one example. Another is his stand that the government must assist people trapped in inner city poverty and violence AND that people trapped in inner city poverty and violence must assist themselves.
Nowhere do I see the Politics of Hope as a promise to be an unresisting target for swift boating.

He would also put strict limits on the size of operations eligible for assistance in cleaning pollution, "so the largest polluters have to pay for their own environmental cleanup."
_ Creation of new cost-sharing programs to help farmers get certification as organic farmers, and revamping crop insurance programs to avoid penalizing organic producers.
