Romney to Address His Mormonism
By Michael Luo

Mitt Romney will deliver a speech entitled “Faith in America,” addressing his Mormon religion, on Thursday at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Tex.

His campaign is describing the address as an opportunity for Mr. Romney to “share his views on religious liberty, the grand tradition religious tolerance has played in the progress of our nation and how the governor’s own faith would inform his presidency if he were elected.”

Mr. Romney personally made the decision to give the speech last week, feeling it was the right moment to do so, his advisers said. After he decided he would make it, the campaign consulted with former President Bush’s library, which invited him to deliver it there.

Suspicions about his Mormon beliefs, which many conservative Christians consider to be heretical, have dogged Mr. Romney’s candidacy since it began, with many polls showing large numbers of Americans would not vote for a Mormon presidential candidate.

Mr. Romney had resisted delivering a speech dedicated to his faith up to this point, choosing instead to address questions about his beliefs when they came up from audience members and reporters.

But many, including evangelical supporters, have long urged him to address the questions head on and deliver an address modeled after the one John F. Kennedy delivered about his Catholicism to a gathering of Southern Baptist ministers in Houston in 1960 that many credit with defusing questions about his faith.

If Mr. Romney’s responses to questions about his faith on the stump are taken as a guide, it is unlikely that he will dwell much, if at all, on the specifics of what he believes but instead talk about the fact the Constitution bars any religious test for higher office.

1. The GOP should take a stand here and Denounce Bigotry.
The TV Media should examine their consciences. They in an effort
to promote GUilliani for what seems like months have daily
brought up Romney's Mormonism. Saying things like: Some people
consider it a cult. The Media affirming the bigotry of a small
group implying it is OK. It is mind boggling.

I think we all know it is primarily some Southern Baptists.

Richard Land at least said, I could vote for Romney over Guilliani.
The Life issue is at stake. I would vote for an Athiest who is pro-life
over a Christian who is pro Choice. I have not seen this Soundbite
anywhere but C-SPan.

We know Religious Bigotry exists. The GOP needs to denounce Religious
Bigotry. What has been done to Romney is disgusting. I am a Liberal
and would not vote for any of the GOP but decency is decency.

3. Sure, if Romney loses Iowa--this boosts Guilliani
Edited on Sun Dec-02-07 07:34 PM by OHdem10
Huckabee is simply making it possible for a Guilliani win.

Huckabee is working for a VP Slot.

His Religious Credentials are nice offset on a Guilliani ticket.

AddedON: Bigotry is still bigotry--no matter the form

7. Somehow I doubt his views on "religious liberty" will be all that different from the people whose
approval he so desperately seeks.

9. Ceepy Mormon end times scenario
This is gonna be a bunch of generic "Jesus/faith/saved/character/family" crap. What I wanna know is:

This business where Jesus comes back to MISSOURI & the freaking LDS run the entire world from the US for a thousand years, but only after some kind of "tribulation" or something that they take secret oaths to help bring about? And the United States is instrumental in this. Hey are you going to try and make that happen sooner rather than later?

What kind of religion needs all this secret oaths. What kind of oaths has he taken....and do any interfere with being the POTUS?

Is it true that there is a replica of the Oval Office in the LDS headquarters?

Frankly, he is allowed to be Mormon, and I'm allowed to take into consideration that Mormons are hook line and sinker with a bunch of really dumb and scary and flat-out crazy stuff. And no, I wouldn't vote for Harry Reid for Prez either!
