Murdoch backs old adversary Clinton
Makes you wonder why?

RUPERT MURDOCH'S Fox News network might lean to the right and its commentators be harsh critics of the Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, but it seems its boss has paid to support her campaign - as have many News Corp executives.

The Federal Election Commission's donor disclosures reveal that Rupert Murdoch and his son James, chief executive of BSkyB in Britain, have each personally contributed generously to Senator Clinton's presidential campaign as have several board members and senior executives.

.......

The Centre for Responsive Politics, a non-profit group in Washington that researches the donor lists, says News Corporation is Senator Clinton's 20th largest supporter. Its executives and staff have contributed more than $US93,000 to her campaign so far.

Last year, as Senator Clinton sought re-election to the Senate, News held a fund-raiser for her in New York: a surprise, given that Fox News and the Murdoch-owned tabloid, the New York Post had attacked her presidential ambitions. At the time a spokesman for Mr Murdoch said the decision reflected his opinion of her as a New York senator and not as a presidential candidate. Her response: "He's my constituent and I am very gratified he thinks I'm doing a good job."

3. I know, he has been contributing ever since he held that huge fundraiser
for her at his house. Didn't know his son was in on it as well. Wow, what is Murdoch going to get out of this?

4. This involves "bundling" for the presidential campaign
And my guess is that it's Murdoch's way to hedge his far right bets.

If Hillary wins the nomination, she'll likely lose- which means more media consolation.

If by chance the Republicans implode, then with Clinton, he's assured that responsible media re-regulation won't be coming from the FCC.

5. Good...
I see nothing wrong with this frankly...if she can neuter some of the bad coverage...great...

btw: Murdoch hmself is not backing Hillary...and Murdoch at al have also contributed to such luminaria as Ted Kennedy, Barbara Boxer and Howard Dean...

And believe it or not some of the top executives at New Corp are Democrats...I wish they would act like it more often!

7. Do a little research...as this has been discussed ad nauseum...
Edited on Fri Nov-30-07 06:40 PM by SaveElmer
One: The fundraiser was for her Senate campaign...not her Presidential campaign...

Two: Murdoch has said on more than one occasion that he is not supporting her for President.

Three: The fundraiser was held at the request of several News Corp employees and execuives who are Democrats...Murdoch obliged...

18. You don't make any sense at all. Murdoch has given her $6500.
The balance of her 2006 funds went into her presidential warchest ($10M). He's donated $2300 to her PRESIDENTIAL campaign fund. You say he's not backing her. I don't see him donating to any other presidential campaigns, do you?

That business people don't give to both sides in a race to "cover their bases" so to speak?

8. Murdoch is backing the pro-corporate DLC candidate whose hubby expanded media deregulation
Oh, and not so coincidentally, Clinton has received more monies from lobbyists/PACs than any candidate, Republican or Democrat.

"Lobbyists are people, too." ~ Hillary Clinton, Yearly Kos 2007

Contrast Clinton's embrace of special interests and corporate plutocrats to Obama, who accepts no lobbyist or PAC monies, and whose 350,000+ donors (more than all candidates combined, Democratic and Republican) each contributed less than $200 each and whose donations comprise well over 95% of Obama's total take.

Barack Obama at today's DNC Fall Meeting:

This party - the party of Jefferson and Jackson; of Roosevelt and Kennedy - has always made the biggest difference in the lives of the American people when we led, not by polls, but by principle; not by calculation, but by conviction; when we summoned the entire nation to a common purpose - a higher purpose. And I run for the Presidency of the United States of America because that's the party America needs us to be right now. A party that doesn't just offer change as a slogan, but real, meaningful change - change that America can believe in.

That's why I'm in this race. I am in this race to tell the corporate lobbyists that their days of setting the agenda in Washington are over. I have done more than any other candidate in this race to take on lobbyists - and won. They have not funded my campaign, they will not get a job in my White House, and they will not drown out the voices of the American people when I am President.

20. I hate a country governed as a plutocracy. That's the greater point you seem to be missing.
That's what we Democrats disliked about the government under Bush Republicans, as I recall.

10. win-win for Murdoch
Hillary wins primaries, she is arguably the easiest Dem for the Republicans to beat. (or unarguably the one with the most negatives)

If Hillary wins Presidency, they will have a friendly ear.

Shrewd move regardless of the motive.
