ON DEADLINE: "Good Bill" vs "Bad Bill"
ON DEADLINE: "Good Bill" vs "Bad Bill"

By RON FOURNIER, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 10 minutes ago

DES MOINES, Iowa - As only he can do, Bill Clinton packed campaign venues across eastern Iowa and awed Democratic voters with a compelling case for his wife's candidacy. He was unscripted, in-depth and generous.

He also was long-winded, misleading and self-absorbed.

"Good Bill" and "Bad Bill" (his nickname among some aides) returned to the public arena Tuesday as Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton brandished her double-edged sword of a husband to fend off rivals in the Jan. 3 caucus fight.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Clinton told 400 Iowans at the start of his three-city swing, "I have had a great couple of days out working for Hillary."

In the next 10 minutes, he used the word "I" a total of 94 times and mentioned "Hillary" just seven times in an address that was as much about his legacy as it was about his wife's candidacy.

He told the crowd where he bought coffee that morning and where he ate breakfast.

He detailed his Thanksgiving Day guest list, and menu.

He defended his record as president, rewriting history along the way.

And he explained why his endorsement of a certain senator from New York should matter to people.

"I know what it takes to be president," he said, "and because of the life I've led since I've left office."

I, me and my. Oh, my.

1. my oh my
Please tell me we won't have to have four more years of this... at least when Biden talks about himself he has something to say. Look can we get over the Bush/Clinton two step and dance with some new stars?

2. Just yesterday I said to someone that Bill WILL mess up and say something (else) that
Hillary's campaign will have to explain or "clarify." Keep it up, Bill! You're handing the nomination to Obama!

3. So you admit Obama wouldn't actually earn the Democratic nomination?
It would have to be handed to him by someone else's mistakes?

:)

6. If hillary doesn't get the

7. Earning the nomination is a combination of MANY things...
including spouses trying to get their spouse elected. Bill is a GREAT help to Hillary. Without him she probably wouldn't even be in this race. So he's now messing up which is all the better for the other candidates. It has nothing to do with Obama having it handed to him.

11. If he is messing up, no one is paying much attention except
...the die hard political junkies. And btw, I was being sarcastic with you earlier.

13. Really? It's being reported on MSNBC and CNN, and most likely Faux, too,
and I BET it will be all over the regular news shows, too. This is a big story.

OK. :hi:

17. LOL! Tweety just did a countdown-95 "I's" from the big dawg! I think
the article is probably pretty factual, with a bit of personal asides thrown in. And I heard Eugene Robinson earlier; he liked the article. Go figure. ;-)

4. "he explained why his endorsement of a certain senator from New York should matter to people"
Like he'd go public if he believed she shouldn't be president? Now, if he was endorsing another candidate, that would mean something.

5. This past year the AP has started releasing right-wing editorials as 'news'. nt

8. Are you saying those quotes are wrong? Is Bill Clinton off limits?
He's out campaigning HARD for his wife to the point Hillry's not even there. If he starts making stuff up it SHOULD be covered.

9. I'm saying the AP has become a right-wing tool that releases opinion pieces...
and calls them 'news' reports.

Hence: "He also was long-winded, misleading and self-absorbed." What's that doing in a "news" report?

10. So the AP hasn't written ANY positive articles about the Clintons?
Those descriptions sound accurate to me. Ya gotta take the bad with the good.

14. I suspect you're right. And Bill Clinton is no ordinary spouse. Sometimes I'm not sure
whether he's campaigning for his wife or for himself.

15. it's a two-fer
What is seen as an advantage now may turn out to be the death knell for Hillary if the mediawhores starting hammering them 1990s style. There is so much bad blood built up, it is bound to ignite at some point.

I've got my money on the new kid to change those dynamics and allow America to move forward. Gobama.

16. I agree. And the media is pointing out the things Bill is saying which
contradict what Hillary said and maybe even what HE said. He has way too much time on his hands to TRY to help Hillary but I really think it's backfiring. It's good that we're seeing this NOW-before we choose our nominee. It's time to get rid of the old politics and nominate and then elect OBAMA!
