The Pope has every four years or so told American Catholics that they cannot vote for candidates of THEIR choice if those candidates merely support (and/or have voted for) legalized abortion. Pope John Paul II went as far as saying if these candidates were also Catholic and made these votes, their actions would prevent them from receiving communion, and thus absolution for their "sins". Mario Cuomo comes to mind. John Kerry got the cold treatment.

Now, Rudolph Giuliani's got a free pass with Pat Robertson despite his three marriages (one to his cousin), adultery on record, his kids aren't really talking to him, his support for abortion and lack of disavowal publicly thereof, and his support for gay rights.

Will the Pope say anything that would challenge Giuliani's candidacy or conveniently remain silent. The marriages could be a good starter. While the first marriage was annulled, the second one is still alive and kicking in the Church's eyes. Will the Pope be the Wild Card? Remember, 49 out of the 50 states are not as conversed in Rudy's antics in NYC as the locals are. The Pope's endorsement is not likely but will he actually challenge Rudy?

3. The last prime minister of Canada was threatened with excommunication after he
legalized gay marriage. Why does the church hate democracy?

6. Didn't Rudy say he would appoint a SCJ that would overturn Roe?
I recall reading that, even though Rudy says he is pro choice. If it is true that Rudy will appoint a SCJ that will overturn Roe, then I believe that the Pope would not denounce Rudy.

The way the Church has recently positioned their view, they have said that taking innocent life - (which in their view means abortion and euthanasia) is "intrinsically evil," and above all other evils - including the war in Iraq, the lies, the damage to the environment, no health care, housing etc for people etc etc. Under this careful positioning, Rudy comes out on top.

Rather remarkable (in a head spinning around and exploding kind of way).
