Percentage who don't want Bush "reelected" sets new high in Newsweek poll

Lots of good stuff here. Doesn't specify his job approval, but says it's under 50 percent for the third straight week. 43 percent want him to be "reelected" and 52 percent do not. Kerry beats Bush by 3 among registered voters (keep in mind our candidates are actually doing better among likely voters at this point) and Edwards is tied, which is his best performamce yet in this poll.

Can anyone remember the last time a party facing an incumbent president had TWO strong candidates, both of whom were capable of winning? I don't. It's an embarrassment of riches. :)

Edit: A Kerry-Edwards ticket also beats Bush-Cheney 49 to 45.

9. Agree.
But I could see him pulling 1 or 2%. And even that could be the deciding margin in a number of close states.

If he thinks about running, he will have my money and my letters of support. Go Roy!

3. Things will change when Bush starts spending his $250Million
Attacking our guys. I am convinced that we will have to support our nominee with as much money as we can. The mud slinging hasn't started yet.

8. It ain't gonna be pretty...
watch for more Kerry (and most likely Edwards) 'scandals' in the coming weeks. Reptilicans can't win on issues. Unless they phony up the numbers. Oh, wait, they're already doing that!

at mudslinging. I won't be happy until the administration steps into quicksand.

11. Bush doesn't have $250 million, or even $200 million
He has raised $150 million and has spent $50 million of it, with nothing to show for it (I posted an AP story with these numbers a few days ago). but I agree that we need to fund our guy to try to at least minimize Bush's financial advantage.

18. Yeah he does.
It's called tax payer's money. He uses Air Force 1 for campaign travail. Sticks visited cities with the tab for his speeches. Even the SOTU would be easy to classify as a campaign speech.

19. I was speaking specifically of money for his campaign
Of course he has all the advantages of incumbency, including the bully pulpit, Air Force 1, etc.

4. This Really is Excellent News, Ma'am
It is hard for an incumbenmt to recover from such disaffection expressed this early in the campaign.

13. Exactly
When you start losing people after you've been in office 3-plus years, it's very hard to get them back.

23. Many Do Not Seem To take The Point, Ma'am
The instances cited, such as '88 or '92, were situations where either there was no incumbent, or it was the incumbent, and not the challenger, who was ahead at this stage. All elections in which an incumbent is involved are essentially referendums on the incumbent personally, and a great number of people indicating disatisfaction at this stage shows that a large proportion of the people are rejecting further tenure in office for the criminals of the '00 Coup. About the only solid hope those wretches have is an outbreak of splinter factionalism on the left....

5. These polls don't mean much now
If polls were accurate this far in advance of an election, Dean would be the dem nominee, Dukakis would have beaten Bush I and Bush I would have beaten Clinton. While entertaining to watch, these polls are practically meaningless. Focus you energies on drumming up support for progressive candidates. Focus on the polls in november.

12. Only one other incumbent president has ever been behind
a challenger this late in the campaign: Gerald Ford, who lost to Jimmy Carter in 1976. Food for thought.

that no winning incumbent behind in the Gallup poll in the year of the election has ever won.

15. Unfortunately, that doesn't translate to voters
Just look at the board. None of us want Bush reelected, but some don't seem to have the will to do what it takes to ensure it.
