Is Lou Dobbs running for President as the next Ross Perot?
Perot voters still looking for a candidate

By: Ben Smith

Last week, CNN’s Lou Dobbs stirred speculation that he might be the next Ross Perot — and reminded the political world that Perot’s potent constituency is still looking for a presidential candidate to back.

“I believe the person elected a year from now will be an independent populist, a man or woman who understands the genius of this country lies in the hearts and minds of its people and not in the prerogatives and power of its elites,” he wrote in an online column, neatly encapsulating what appears to be his view of himself. He also added that this person would be “a candidate who has not yet entered the race.”

After letting the speculation roil for several days, Dobbs denied that he himself plans a run.

But his hints — not to mention the high ratings for his opinionated CNN show — served as a reminder that while the Texas billionaire may have vanished from the political scene, his ideas, and his appeal, are rattling around this year as loudly as ever.

1. Dobbs/Bloomberg would stir up the pot.
Perot was interesting in 1992, but in 1996 he seemed more a self-mockery.

I know some DUers don't like Dobbs, but I do. Or perhaps I misread his comments, but one thing I am not is militant and there's always a POV that inflection can inadvertently ignore.

But I don't think he'll run.

Nor will Gore.

But people can write-in who they want. Just hope everyone does a write-in for the same candidate. Do you trust your fellow voter?

3. This would be the Nader of the conservatives..........
I see this as more of a problem for the GOP. I think he would draw a hell of lot more from the Republican side just like Nader did to the Democratic side. At the very least it would make the GOP very nervous. I think I would enjoy watching Lou having the whole bag of GOP dirty tricks thrown at him. What an interesting show that would make for, and their would be a definite loser at the end of the battle!

4. Dobbs said he's not running but keeps suggesting that someone will...
...run as an Indie representing the middle class. I hope he's right ~ both parties need a good slap upside the head!

5. He keeps calling himself a populist, but he's still a Republican to me.
It might be a smart idea, though, for Republicans to rename and rebrand their party. But Lou Dobbs alienates so many people of all parties that I don't think he'll ever make it to the top.
