Non-ABB/Nader voters: Why not wait until 2008?
If the Democratic nominee loses to Bush in 2004, it could lead to some very bad things. The main thing is that, with some moderate-to-liberal justices possibly retiring soon, a Bush win could lead to an extreme right-wing Supreme Court. This is something that should frighten ALL socially liberal people, regardless of party affiliation. If you are pro-choice and against sodomy laws, you should do everything in your power to STOP this from happening!! However, if the Democratic nominee wins, we will avoid those right-wing appointees. ....And just imagine if Scalia and/or Thomas stepped down! We could end up with a much more liberal Supreme Court if the Democrat wins! This is a crucial time and I believe that all socially liberal people, regardless of political affiliation, should unite and vote for one candidate to defeat the religious right.

In 2008, I don't think it will be the same type of situation. If Kerry (or Edwards) defeats Bush, and replaces the retired justices with non-rightwing justices, then we will have successfully avoided a really bad right-wing takeover. I heard that the Republican nominee could be Rudy Guliani, a more moderate Republican. If it were 2008, with a progressive and healthy (not retiring soon) Supreme Court , and a more moderate Republican opponent, I don't think there would be as much urgency against voting 3rd party. I would still vote for Kerry, but there wouldn't be so much at stake. Worst case scenario in this case: the moderate Republican wins, but doesn't appoint anybody to the Supreme Court........................................

Worst case scenario in 2004: A total right-wing take-over of the Supreme Court....Roe v. Wade overturned, sodomy laws, less personal freedom..and those judges are there for LIFE, or until they step down. I'm really worried about this. We really need to stick together this time!! I have nothing against third parties and I don't usually feel this strongly, but this could be the end of America as we know it if we don't stick together this one time. Think about the progress that has been made in terms of reproductive rights, gay rights, the right to have consensual sex...which the conservatives were so against. Think about how good it will feel that Wednesday morning after sticking together pays off and Bush and Ashcroft are on their way out. And if you still don't like Kerry's performance, then go ahead and give him a 3rd party challenge in 2008!

3. Because
The Edwards-Bush war position ("we did the right thing") is as comforting to the American mind as it is deadly.

If it is allowed to take hold as a winning strategy for both parties, it will not be dislodged except by terrible destruction. The opposition party *must* stand against this idea.

7. There is never a convenient time to vote third party.
Everyone needs to vote their conscience . Compromise got us into the mess that we are in now. Each year the distinctions between the parties become less clear. To tell those who believe that the two party system is a failure, to wait just 4 more years is ridiculous. There will always be a reason to urge them not to vote third party.
Everyone needs to vote for the candidate they want to see in office. If that candidate is third party then they should vote third party.
