Giuliani/Thompson 2008
Taking my cue from an Atrios musing, does Fred Thompson really look like he's running for President?

More like Veep. He's got the backing of all the Cheney cronies, and Giuliani's got his guy in as Attorney General right now (and could have had Kerik in as DHS Secretary).

So take a look at Giuliani/Thompson 2008.

New York is in play. The Southern Strategy is locked down. Both G and T have strong pro-life endorsements. Fred can talk to the NRA in their language.

They even compliment each other in job description. Fred's a fake good DA, Giuliani's a questionable real DA. Both are long-term political operatives.

Both have mixed it up with Hillary in the past - Giuliani as NY Mayor while Hillary was Senator, Fred back in the Watergate days when both were floating around the periphery there (although Fred's got busting Nixon on the tapes).

This isn't a prediction - it's just looking at what's been going on. Fred shores up all of Giuliani's failures except pro-life. Both have gotten key endorsements there.

The fix is in. The Republicans don't have a choice at all.

2. New York NOT in play
I don't care who his running mate is - Rudy is toast here (esp after rooting for the Sox in the world series). No way he takes NY.

5. Yeah, I shouldn't have said that.
Plus, the firefighters are gunning for him after the radio debacle.

4. nope
Fred doesn't do Second Banana and Giuliani won't work with someone who would even think about taking attention away from him. So, the two of them would be like oil and very dirty, icky, disgusting water.

And you compare two balding white men on their second or third wives to whatever the Dems are going to offer, it's going to look like Old America as compared to a shiny, new, opportunity-filled New America.

6. Fred has done Second Banana all his life
What movie has ever starred Fred Thompson? Even in Law and Order, the role of the DA is a supporting character, even though he's the "boss."

He was the junior Senator from Tennessee as well. Fred IS the Second Banana.

I'll give you the attention whore Giuliani. But I'll bet Fred knows how to play his part.

I'll even give you the skirt-chasing element as well. I didn't say they were going to win. :D I just think that this marriage has been in the works for a while.

7. true
but having met and worked with Fred, the Big Lie on-set was always "Mr. Thompson, you're the star of this and we're so very, very fortunate that you're gracing us with your presence". I'm serious. He walked on-set -- usually late -- like a Star, was treated with kid gloves (Shhh, Mr. Thompson is taking his nap now) and, more than some of the stars themselves, was kowtowed to because he has a HUGE temper.

His poor head has been filled with thoughts of him being President and I don't believe he'll take a V.P. slot when he can go home and sleep in his hammock and then take a movie role or tow (he thinks). If he doesn't have the umph to campaign for President, how can he even think of taking on the General Election?!

8. Ahhh
Insider dirt, the best kind.

And it does ring true, I must admit. I actually worked with his brother down south, and Kenny Dale is a little bit more gracious than all that. He's not the star and player Fred is, though. I never got to meet Fred.

10. Excellent point
Rudy doesn't like sharing credit. He'll pick someone (if he's the nominee) that'll help bring in a certain state or burnish his street cred with the social conservatives (I'm thinking Huckabee or someone like that).

Rudy takes credit for the reduction in crime rate (while it was going down all over the country due to the Clinton boom) and it was William Bratton (I think he's the commisioner in Los Angeles now) who made all that happen. When Bratton started getting the credit, Rudy canned him and gave us Kerik who he could control. And we're starting to see the results of that partnership. So much dirt out there about these two. They pissed off the wrong person in that Regan lady (and I use that term rather loosely here). Woman scorned with connections.

Do you have any evidence that the "fix is in" or is this just uninformed woo woo bullshit? Please post one scintilla of evidence that "the fix is in" or that Thompson is running for vice president.
