John McCain says progress in Iraq is measured by Democrats' silence on the troop increase

NEW LONDON, New Hampshire - Republican presidential hopeful John McCain said Sunday he can tell the U.S. troop increase in Iraq is having an effect on the violence there.

How? Democrats, who generally oppose the war, have stopped linking him to the troop build-up, he says.

President George W. Bush sent thousands of additional troops to Iraq earlier this year in an effort to control the violence. McCain, an Arizona senator and the senior Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, had long called for sending in more troops.

"When I first advocated this path to success, people like Senator (John) Edwards called it 'the McCain strategy,' 'the McCain surge.' It wasn't and it isn't. But I notice he doesn't say that any more," McCain said.

McCain also notes, especially for anti-war voters, that he was an early critic of the war strategy waged by former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld.

1. Well, if he still wants to link himself to the war and the surge, I say, go right ahead, asshole.
You own it. It's all yours. The American people want this war to end--you pushed for exactly the opposite. History won't be kind. And you'll never be President.

4. He told himself...
Democrats, who generally oppose the war, have stopped linking him to the troop build-up, he says.

He's become a non-factor.

5. Yes -- "I notice he (Edwards) doesn't say that any more."
Maybe because Edwards isn't thinking about him at all. Who is?

6. Who is? That is exactly my point...
Mccain is desperately trying to hang on to some shred of relevancy, he has made himself irrelevant.
