Singers Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt backing Edwards
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Singer and songwriter Jackson Browne says Democrat John Edwards is the most progressive candidate with a chance at winning the White House, and that he would do the most for working-class Americans.

Browne, talking in a telephone interview with The Associated Press, says he thinks it's a critical time for the country -- and that John Edwards is the man to lead the country.

Famous for hits including "Running on Empty," "Doctor My Eyes," "Somebody's Baby" and "The Pretender," Browne will be joined by Grammy award winning singer and songwriter Bonnie Raitt early next week at 5 of Edwards' campaign stops in Iowa.

The two musicians are co-founders of Musicians United For Safe Energy, along with Graham Nash and John Hall.

My first-choice candidate backed by two of my all-time favorite musicians.

There it is.

133. Yes, I think so, too
I've been leaning Obama the entire time, and never been all that impressed with JE, but I've kind of lost my enthusiasm for Obama - I still like him, just not as much, and after watching the debates, I find I like JE better than I used to, although I really wish Joe Biden would jump higher in the polls. I did like when Edwards brought up the neocons in the last debate.

It would not be a problem for me at all to vote for JE - I mainly want to vote in the primary for the person who has the best chance of beating the annointed one, and it seems like it's just starting to get interesting now - I don't think I'll know who it will be for quite a while yet, or if, in fact, she'll remain the annointed one at all.

my very first love and they were amazing. Bonnie came out and stamped out the beat for the band, and then, Jackson came out behind her and shook his head and stamped out a different one. It was all in fun. Two leaders figuring out how to share a stage. lol.

Shows you what I know. :)

Edit: And I bet that happens to him all the time. I thought it was Joan's song because I first heard her sing it -- in the same way people think "Take It Easy" is an Eagles' song.

17. radiclib's got it
"I thought I was a Child" which she covered on Taking My Time.

My all tiem favorite song of hers however, she wrote herself. "Nothing seems to matter" off of GIve it Up. Which I saw her do on her last tour, after not singing it for something like twenty years.

Another bit of BR trivia; she won't sing Love Has No Pride anymore in concert, hasn't in years, because fans used to literally demand that she perform it.

She's truly a living legend. And the woman who taught lowell george (a dead legend) how to play slide guitar.

29. There were three acts I always caught no matter how crazy
my schedule or how skinny my wallet in the 80s. Van Morrison, Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt. Lucky for me, the last two toured together. And although I don't even remember the title of that tape, I remember playing it over and over and over during the worst of Doug's illness because there was steel there, something to hang on to. She really is one of a kind. :)

61. they did a tour
with Dylan in 1974, and it was right as Watergate was coming to a head, the whole country just wanted Nixon gone, and I saw them in Boston Garden (i was all of fifteen years old) and Dylan sang It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) and when he got to those lyrics "And even the President of the United States must have to stand naked" the entire place went wild for about fifteen minutes. They had to stop playing. It was one of those moments frozen in time.

That summer I spent on my mother in law's recliner because I was pregnant and the chair had a heater and a vibrator and my back was killing me.

My husband was a musician. And he turned me on to real, good music that was written in that century, even. lol

The music, the baby, the politics were all of a piece for us. That was an amazing moment.

75. Sometimes
those days seem almost clearer to me than today. I remember certain things like they were yesterday.

My great American novel, which I swear I will get to in my dotage, is about this very theme; your and my generation were the younger brothers and sisters of the woodstock generation. We grew up with all the ideals of the counter culture as a GIVEN, not as something we fought for, but as something handed down to us as a hard won foundation of how to live life. And then the late seventies and the eighties and Ronald Reagan happened and the very BASIS of the our worldview was ripped away from us as our country went careening in the opposite direction. We were that generation between the hippies and the eighties kids and the fact that the promise of our childhood got stolen away is a remarkable tale of loss. Anyway, I'm meandering. :)

tunes.

I love it.

"I Thought I Was A Child" is one of the most powerful songs every composed from a keyboard. The lyrics bore into you like a termite and the never come out and you don't want them to.

"It's such a clever innocense with which you show myself to me..."

I have both versions on my ipod (and on cds, cassettes and albums-lol.) I like Bonnie Raitt's cover better, too, but it's close.

The best part of the 2004 election, for me, was getting to go to the Vote for Change concert in DC. JB and BR were great that night! (As were Eddie Vedder, Springsteen, REM...)

I might need to take a trip to Iowa next week! I'm glad they are supporting Edwards.

Ya know that old trees just grow stronger,
and old rivers grow wilder every day,
Old people just grow lonesome
waiting for someone to say,
"Hello in There. Hello."

So if you're walking down the street sometime
and spot some hollow ancient eyes,
please don't just pass 'em by and stare
as if you didn't care.
Say, "Hello in there. Hello.

That is Ned Lamont, the CT US Senate Democratic nominee.

There was a rally for Lamont New Haven, and John Edwards came up to show his support for him.

Here's a clip of the event. http://youtube.com/watch?v=cZar5aNDDsI

11. Hi, Harper_is-Bush. If you like solo artists of the 1970s era compositions,
you might like these two musicians.

Take a chance if you have iTunes or head to the library and listen to "Rock Me On the Water" by Jackson Browne from the SATURATE BEFORE USING album. Awfully good stuff.

19. Nicely put indeed. Yes it is.
Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" introduced her for the first time to some people, but for an old-timer like me, I almost expected her to be singing that beautifully late in her career down in the garden some night, and then one night, there she was.

Except she was singing more beautifully than ever.

Your idea with the donation? It's very generous and it will be appreciated. Send it with a cover letter and hell -- my guess is you'll stop the show at Edwards headquarters.

What a damned nice thing to do.

skull and is still camped out very deep somewhere in my brain.

Every now and then I'm in a store and the soundtrack will play Browne's original of that song. It makes me stop what I'm doing and think about things.

I hope you are still in touch with that friend. He or she sounds like a winner to me.

I'm not sure anybody can ask more of a mature adult than that kind of response to absence, and you are exhibiting it tonight, right here.

Yes, music is like that -- it moves like fog into the parts of our memory and reactivates the people we used to know. I think we miss them because they also used to know us. They had become living repositories of who we were in those past times and past places. Walking, present biographers of our identities. Valuable records of our past.

I can see where most people wouldn't think much of Winslow. I've been through it twice now, on my way back during cross-country roadtrips. The first time we just drove through but this time we stop and took pictures of the "Standin on the corner" statue and mural. That was kind of hokey and touristy, but fun! We had one of the best meals of the whole trip there, too.

122. Actually, I doubt it very much since Jackson was a notorious ladies man
back in those days, and Geffen hadn't come out of the closet yet - I've probably read everything there is to read about JB, and I've read a book or two about Geffen, as well.

The story is: Jackson sent Geffen a tape, with an 8x10, Geffen tossed it out, his secretary thought Jackson was cute, took the tape out, listened to it, and told Geffen maybe he should give it a listen. Geffen did, and was knocked out by it. I think Jackson was the first artist he discovered, with Laura Nyro possibly being the 2nd.

At the time, Geffen was into developing artists, spending the money and time that managers and record companies don't do these days. Geffen went on to "discover" most of the famous Southern California singer/songwriters/rockers, and formed his own label so the artists could have more freedom, I think. He befriended all his artists, and advanced them money until they were ready to record.

Not that it would matter to me, but having been a JB fan since 1973, this is the first time I've ever seen that rumor, and I've read just about EVERYTHING!

73. Great News !!
If we can't have Al ... John will do just fine. My heart's with Dennis, but as Jackson says ... "John Edwards is the most progressive candidate with a chance at winning". At this point voting for Dennis, would likely only help Hillary's chances. I hate to say that ( and would love to be convinced otherwise ), but I will now concentrate all my effort with Edwards.

I hate to admit how ignorant I was on the fact that Obama is so PRO nuclear energy ?!? That plus his homophobic preacher friends ... nope. It's ALL about Edwards for me right now.

about working class americans?

this is almost as stupid as swooning because edwards walked the
picket line with the millionaire screen writers. this guy just
really doesn't seem to get it.

113. They'd know quite a bit as a result of their DECADES
of social activism.

115. Yes. "Decades" as in many years. Many years.
Some posters on DU haven't been around as long as Bonnie and Jackson have been social activists.

We American citizens are a diverse lot.

119. I can see, though, how the poster might mistake these two
for just Hollywood types if unfamiliar with their work. It's pretty unusual to have two such talented people with such huge bodies of work spend so much time, money and effort on just plain old people. :)

121. True, although a bit of googling on the web would have offered a glimpse
of their contributions.

In any case, 90% of this thread praises their incredible music talent.

That should have been a signal that we liked Bonnie and Jackson.

When the principled are also talented, it's a rare and beautiful thing.

123. Not really check out this video for Lives in the Balance
They've both been political activists for years, and working for social change as well. Jackson Browne probably does more benefit concerts than he does concerts for financial gain. JB wrote the song back in 1986, or thereabouts. It's more relevant today than it was then, but, as you will see, he is, and has been, quite aware of what's going on in this country, and has been doing his part for decades to try to change it.

156. It's haunting and sad and absolutely infuriating that
the song is more relevant now than it was even then.

It is indeed infuriating - when I first heard it all those years ago, I had no idea what he was talking about - when I watch it now, it gives me chills...

household with a factory worker father. Just because he became rich, don't think he's not a champion of the poor. He has every right to walk a picket line and shake hands with the workers without being accused of being a fake.

We just spent money we really couldn't afford, but are willing to scrimp for, to see Neil Young.

148. Another article from the AP
Jackson Browne Campaigns for Edwards

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Jackson Browne says that Democrat John Edwards is the most progressive candidate with a chance at winning the White House, and that he would do the most for working-class Americans.

"It's a challenge to hook yourself up to what a politician says he's going to do, and see if he's going to do it," the singer-songwriter said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "I think it's a really critical time in our country and our world, and I think that working people need a champion, and I think that John Edwards is that person."

Famous for hits including "Running on Empty" and "The Pretender," Browne will be joined by Grammy Award-winning colleague Bonnie Raitt next week at five of Edwards' campaign stops in Iowa.

The two are co-founders of Musicians United For Safe Energy, along with Graham Nash and John Hall. In 1979, the group played a series of "No-Nukes" concerts, drumming up activism to thwart the spread of nuclear power. The group now works through Nukefree.org and opposes a federal bailout of the nuclear energy industry.
