In Richmond, Governor Kaine spent a lot of time trying to break down racial barriers and figuring out ways to unite people from different classes and backgrounds. Now, as governor of Virginia, he has the same challenges: "How do you bring people together?"

He has very unique experiences. The experience of having a Kenyan father and being raised for a few years in Indonesia . That's a powerful experience in forming character. His work as a community organizer, his work in the state legislature to reform criminal justice issues and improve healthcare, and his work on ethics in the U.S. Senate. He's a smart person but he's smart enough to know what he doesn't know. It takes a smart person and a self-confident person to know when to listen to other people.

In Virginia, where we haven't gone for a Democratic candidate in a very long time, the only way I got elected governor was by uniting Democrats and independents and lots of moderate Republicans. It's still tough for a Democrat to get our 13 electoral votes, but the independents and the moderate Republicans are very excited about Barack's run.
