Who do you hope wins the Republican Nomination?
I kind of hope Romney gets the Nom.

If they again steal the POTUS he seems to be the least repugnant of the bunch.

1. I agree--Romney is a weenie, but a pragmatic weenie, not crazy. The rest of them--batshit.

25. Romney is definitly 100% insane
He was our governor in MA.

He alon stirred up all the crazies here in the gay marriage debate when most people really didn't give a crap. Romney is just as much of a crazy and Georg Bush if not more.

If I was looking at a pragmatic Republican I'd probably go with Huckabee. He has his crazy notions but doesn't think his opinions put himself higher than anyone else. I think he's more introspective and thinks about what people are saying to him based on his appearances on Bill Maher.

The others in the field of Republican candidates are freakin certifiable.

28. You're insane, if you think Huckabee is sane--he's the batshit craziest
Edited on Sat Nov-17-07 04:37 PM by wienerdoggie
of them all. But hey, you saw him on TV, right? That makes him honest.

http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2007/11/13/huckabee/

Huckabee thinks that God guides his hunting bullets to the deer that he's shooting at. He believes that he can ignore Congress and bomb Iran if he so chooses, even if they tell him no. He doesn't believe in evolution or science--he's actually been quoted as saying that if there is a conflict between God's teachings and science, then he'll go with God, on the theory that "science changes but God doesn't". He thinks teenagers ought to carry concealed weapons to help keep gang violence down. He has a fellow preacher working for him, trying to convince the evangelical flocks that God has chosen Hucky to be our next President. He believes that if we hadn't legalized abortion, all those fetuses would have grown up to pick our lettuce and nail our shingles, and then our illegal immigration problem would be solved today. He believes that the next step after gays marrying would be for men to marry their dogs. On top of that, he's more corrupt and crooked than almost anyone else in the race. But you saw him on TV, and he seems like a nice guy, so you run with that.

On edit--find me once instance where Romney is "crazy"--not against gays, or any other conservative position--I mean CRAZY, as in "out of touch with reality", for comparison.

8. I agree, people need to realize no candidate is going to win big.
The era of dominant election victories ended on the night Gore won the popular vote, but lost the EC to Bush. No more blowout victories, at least not for a while. If Kerry couldn't have slammed Bush -- and whether the election was stolen is moot, since it shouldn't have been close anyway -- I doubt any of our candidates can slam their candidates. It's going to be another tight race, which means the Democrats better hope they don't concede election theft.

I do believe our best hope would be Ron Paul, because he would be tossed aside as a loony righty, while the others can at least mask their conservatism to a point where it isn't as big of an issue.

19. Repiglickin Candidates NEVER GET ANY REAL SCRUTINY. Only Democrats Do!
Repiggies only have to claim they "found God" and all is forgiven.

Democrats have to be squeaky clean all their lives, and even then they get Swift Boated.
(You can't be much more squeaky-clean than John Kerry!)

Skeletons in Repiglickin closets Simply Don't Matter. At All.

If the Ghoul wins the nomination the Mighty Slime Machine will paint him as the hero of 9/11.
We will have a very difficult time running against that.

4. Ever since I saw Rudy going to the Middle East and raising money
from American oil men, I've had the feeling that the fix is in.

He's got a lot of negatives but if they steal it like they did for Junior, it won't matter.

He's an authoritarian despite his marriages and his drag and his mishandling of 9/11. He seems to be the most authoritarian of the bunch. That and the oil money makes me suspect that BushCo will doublecross McCain and go with Rudy.

6. Romney is crazy.
Edited on Sat Nov-17-07 02:05 PM by Drunken Irishman
And not because he's LDS. I'm tired of people making that an issue. I know many good LDS people. He isn't one of them, but it has nothing to do with his religion. Romney is a flip-flopper who will say anything to get elected. Which tells me he has NO values or convictions and can be shaped by the people who pony up the most cash to his campaign.

Nothing worse than a blank canvas candidate, because those are the ones who can be easily manipulated and with the neo-cons at the level they're currently at, I believe they could easily mold him into a warmongering, George Bush like president.

The least one influenced by the neo-cons is clearly Ron Paul, however, he's so far to the right on other issues that I would almost rather have a warmongering president who at least funds domestic programs at home.

So the answer? None of them. They're all evil. I think the best of the bunch was probably Tommy Thompson, and he's out.

7. That's not "crazy"--that's doing what it takes to get elected. "Crazy" is
believing that God is putting you into office, or not believing in evolution. Or believing you're a true hero for a tragic event in which you acted like anyone else would have, or going after squeegee men because you've run out of REAL criminals to go after. Or screaming about "gay sweaters" and snapping at people, and then tearfully apologizing. Or believing you're fit to be President because you can act that way on TV. I have just described Huckabee, Rudy, McCain, and Thompson, if you haven't noticed. Romney is a convictionless calculating asshole, but he's sane.

11. It should. I do not dismiss Mittens. He is methodically marching to the
nomination, and nobody is noticing--he's ahead in most early states. And there's probably no pictures of him in drag, or hugging Bernie Kerik, either.

14. The only issues Romney has to face is his religion.
Edited on Sat Nov-17-07 02:24 PM by Drunken Irishman
And the fact his record is far more liberal than what he currently is. Our only hope, and I know this sound horrible, is that southern Republicans are so bigoted that they don't overlook his religion. Of course, winning the south that way would require a Democrat who could at least garner southern votes. If a bigoted WASP enters the voting booth and has the option between Romney and Clinton, it's a good possibility he'll choose Romney. But barely.

16. It's sad to hope that, but I understand it. I actually think his flip-floppiness
and sheer lack of likeability will hurt him worse. I have always said, if his campaign had found a way to make him look more authentic and likeable, he would have had the nomination wrapped up already--that was really the whole basis of Fred Thompson's appeal, until people found out quickly that his TV image was ALL he had.

17. Yeah, you're right.
Romney isn't very likeable, especially since he has nothing to stand on. At least Bush had something to stand on when he was running for President. He wasn't nearly the flip-flopper that Romney is. In fact, I think the "flip-flop" charge hurt Kerry, too, and made him less likeable.

I do love the fact Fred Thompson was supposed to be the Republican's savior, walked into the race and sputtered badly. I guess it doesn't help when you look like you've been dead for 5 years.

23. That's very disturbing--although it doesn't seem to have been a factor
for him so far. He gets a lot of negative press, that I've noticed. And the radio RW hate-spewers don't seem to favor him either--so his connection to Clear Channel may not make much difference. I've always wondered about Bloomberg running--what the hell would Bloomberg News report about him? It's scary that these candidates can literally own the media, and yet, the worst media in terms of slant is still Fox, owned and run by non-politicians.

that guy is batshit insane and would lose the general to anybody he's up against.

The repuke that scares me the most is Mike Huckabee, he's a fundie nutjob but he comes across as reasoned and kind of nice. I think he would be the toughest to beat and pretty scary if he made it in the office.

because I think he'll be the easiest of the big three to beat. Giuliani and McCain would be much more difficult because they are perceived as more moderate and popular among independents.

26. Ron Paul Winning the Republican Primary Would be Interesting
We don't want him to be President, of course, but if Ron Paul won the Repiglickin nomination
that would make it pretty clear that nobody wants this war anymore, and that it is OK for
the Democratic nominee to call for bringing the troops home.

any of them can win fair and square. However, counting Bush style - the scariest are Giuliani (neocons darling) and believe it or not - Ron Paul (before he stops the war, he has a theocracy that tells you what to do, but lets corporations roam free - whic means, he can't even stop the war.
