Marchers surround Justice Department building
Source: CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Thousands of demonstrators encircled Justice Department headquarters in the nation's capital on Friday to demand the government crack down harder on hate crimes.

Thousands gather Friday morning at Freedom Plaza in the nation's capital for a march to the Justice Department.

"We have so many people we surrounded the Justice Department and two blocks more," the Rev. Al Sharpton told CNN as the orderly crowd marched around the building where newly sworn-in Attorney General Michael Mukasey was working.

"This is a real outcry, a real outrage from people around this country," he said.

Marchers walked from Freedom Plaza to the Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building, which they planned to circle seven times, in an apparent allusion to the biblical story of the fall of Jericho.

As they began to circle the building, only about 20 feet separated the front of the line of protesters -- marching eight abreast -- from the end.

10. You have to be fucking kidding me? THIS is what brings 'em out, huh?
First of all, it's not a secret that I think "hate crimes" legislation is pretty much b.s., and I know others on DU passionately disagree with me. But others do agree with me, just as passionately. That is not the point of my post, so hopefully we won't get too far sidetracked with yet another back-and-forth about why we need "hate" crimes when killing is already a criminal activity. What bothers me is that the very fabric of our democracy is being shredded before our eyes, we have criminals occupying the White House, and no one is surrounding the Justice Department -- or batter still, Reid and Pelosi's offices -- demanding justice. It should be surrounded every damned day until the thugs are removed from power. But we'll show up in force for this.

And in other parts of the country, to protest unfair treatment of Britney.

In Boston last night, people camped out overnight in freezing whether in hopes of getting a fucking Macy's gift card.

Is it just me, or our priorities kinda whacked? All the hate crimes legislation in the world won't do you a bit of good if the government can send you away to a secret prison and torture you just for speaking out.

12. I so agree with you about the order of priorities. Where's this level of participation
in regard to preserving & protecting the Constitution from neo-cons? About preserving & protecting American citizens' basic human rights?

Yep, I'm disappointed, too.

21. Apparently not.
It seems we can focus on one boutique issue, but can't make it a priority to march in defense of the constitution.

16. I think it's disingenuous to compare this to a Britney Spears rally..
or a Macy's gift card grab. I'm white, so far be it for me to judge whether people are showing proper outrage over civil rights abuses against black people.

30. Of course, no one made that equation. Just the opposite.
You need to duck-tape down that knee so it doesn't jerk quite so much.

Who the hell said a civil rights rally EQUALS a Macy's gift card sleepover? Just because two events are mentioned in the same post doesn't mean they were given equal weight. My complaint was that people seem to be able to find all sorts of reasons to "rally," except for the one that trumps them all -- our constitution and a quiet coup by a band of criminals. Surely you're intelligent enough to understand that I did not say all things were equal. I merely made the point that rallying for civil rights won't mean a damn thing it we don't rally to save the constitution which purportedly grants those rights.

11. I heard it on the news last night..
they were underplaying it and making it sound like nobody really knew about it, they weren't expecting a big crowd. The only thread I saw was last night CatWoman posted something on it, and it got little notice.

This was my take on it..

Edited on Fri Nov-16-07 04:00 PM by balantz
All of these issues are coming to the fore. There is no reason why all of these issues cannot be rallied together, including the IMPEACHMENT issue. I say this outcry is directly related to the stomping on the Constitution by the impeachable perpretrators of the WAR. I like the crafty, silent style of these protestors, and the circling symbolism as in the walls of Jericho will now crumble. GO JUSTICE!!
