Rep. Mark Souder's background from Wiki
Edited on Fri Nov-16-07 10:03 AM by Botany
Fired Cafe Worker Incident

A cafeteria worker in the Capitol lost his job days after Rep. Mark Souder (R-Ind.) left the establishment
in a huff because his sandwich was grilled, not toasted.
Kennison Battle, better known as “Mohammed,” was fired the week following the Souder incident.

Souder was born in Grabill, Indiana and attended Leo High School, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne and the University of Notre Dame. While in college, he was a member of the Young Americans for Freedom. Souder is the only Congressman at present to be a member of Church of the United Brethren in Christ, but was raised in the Apostolic Christian Church.

Influence of religion
In 2004, Souder said in an interview that "the closer to the clearness of the Bible, the less ability I should have to compromise. So I view, on abortion, there's really not much room to compromise." He said, regarding Israel, "he bottom line is, they're God's chosen people. He's going to stand with them. The question is: Are we going to stand with them?"<1> Souder also applied for conscientious objector status during the Vietnam War on religious grounds.

Chicken Hawk too. :grr:

others and their sons and daughters to war and possibly die or become maimed but for him, the closest he will get to war or violence is passing and signing bills in favor of war or attacking a young poor working cafeteria worker.

3. I don't think "chicken hawk" should be applied to those who were COs
as young men based on their religious upbringing. Sauder was raised in the Apostolic Christian Church. According to their website:

"17. Governmental authority is respected and obeyed. Members serve in a non-combatant status in the military. Oaths are not taken, but truth is affirmed."

So it is likely he applied for CO status during the Vietnam War because of this - during the Vietnam War people could be COs and serve as non-combatants if drafted. My guess is this is what happened with Sauder.

He may have changed some of his beliefs since then. I don't think much of his political views either but I think it is not fair to put him in the Chicken Hawk category based on a decision made as a result of a religious upbringing.
