suicides in military
Edited on Fri Nov-16-07 03:56 AM by AnotherDreamWeaver
I heard about this while at a meeting, a google search brought up this:
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/004698.php

The disturbing psychological effects of the Iraq War continue to be unearthed. CBS is preparing a two-part special on the suicide rate of soldiers and veterans, finding that the numbers are larger than the already-disturbing figures released by the Department of Veteran Affairs; CBS estimates over 6,000 suicides annually in 2005. Meanwhile, Time Magazine reports that the mental toll hits reservists even harder than active soldiers. (Huffington Post, Time)

Wow, who is out there saying, "Your more likely to kill yourself than get killed in combat" if you join the military?
(should have hit spell check again)

1. You can watch a couple of CBS episodes in the
Political Video section. Also, if interested, you can visit youtube and search on veteran suicides and find a few other stories.

2. Hey, Thanks...
Welcome to DU. I feel honored to get your first post. And you donated and everything...(I told Skinner I would donate if he put me in the fun run too)

I have known for a long time that more military folks did themselves in after coming home from Vietnam than were killed in country. Looks like the same thing is happening now.

died since Gulf1. I've seen some wierd stuff on troops who served in that one and noone can tell them what they have or why, but the common factor? service in Gulf1.

5. I think it is depleted uranium syndrome
It's like the Agent Orange of Vietnam. Have you seen "A Different Nuclear War, Children of the Gulf War" photos and text by Takashi Morizumi? It is my understanding Takasi is a survivor of one of the nuclear bombs dropped on Japan. The book is put out by Global Peacemakers Association Atlanta. Here is their web page: http://www.transnet-jp.com/DUban/
There have been children in this country being born with deformities, but they don't put much in the press, it might soften their "war hard-on".
