Seymour Hersh: Obama 'Only Hope' for US-Muslim Ties
Barack Obama represents "the only hope for the US in the Muslim world," according to Pulitzer-prize
winning investigative reporter Seymour Hersh. Because Obama's father was a Muslim, he "could lead
a reconciliation between the Muslim countries and the US." With any of the other candidates as
president, Hersh said, "we're facing two or three decades of problems in the Mideast, with 1.2 billion
Muslims."

Hersh's work first gained worldwide recognition in 1969 for exposing the My Lai massacre and its cover-up
during the Vietnam War, for which he received the 1970 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting. His 2004
reports broke the story on the US military's mistreatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison.

1. I have to disagree with Hersh on this

I don't think that Obama is the "only one" to break ties, but I don't he's even the one to do it.

2. Hersh's opinion does have some weight, given his decades of being so close to the action.
But everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm just grateful that Republicans seem unlikely
to steal another election in Ohio in 2008.

3. well, that could change
particularly if you let the same people who ran Kerry's campaign run this one.
By the way, they work for Hillary now.......

9. Ohio has a Democratic Gov. and SoS, so I doubt there will be voter fraud in 2008
But I get your drift. ;-)

4. HuffPo will promote any anti-Clinton slant they can.
Even if it's a bizzare one like this.

8. Actually, that's wrong. They had a headliner that said Clinton won the debate last night.
I respect the integrity of a non-partisan investigative reporter like Seymour Hersh.
Anyone who broke the My Lai massacre story and the Abu Ghraib story is golden
in my book.

5. This Is My Greatest Hope...We Are So Far Down The Toilet With The Muslim World
And I truly believe that winning their hearts and minds, healing the divisions, emboldening the moderate voices, building up their infrastructure, and creating something resembling a stable middle class through a diversified economy is far more important to winning the war on terror than any military strike could ever be.

Obama could serve as a dramatic bridge to that world. I love his willingness to present peaceful options as the truly "tough" stances, rather than the media and candidates who think they have to play tough guy for short-sighted voters.

7. Point to Obama
I think this is a very credible observation. I must admit that I never thought of the benefits it could have vis a vis foreign relations with the Muslim world. I'm not even an Obama fan, but I think it gives him a point or two.
