Obama PAC Helps Local Candidates

Friday November 16, 2007 12:46 AM

By JIM KUHNHENN

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Barack Obama's political action committee contributed $128,000 from July through September to local candidates and political organizations in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, key early states in the race for the presidential nomination.

Several recipients of the money have endorsed Obama's presidential bid.

Details of the contributions were contained in a report filed with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday by Obama's Hopefund political action committee. The PAC also contributed $240,000 to congressional candidates across the country.

It is not unusual for presidential candidates to use their political action committees or their own campaign funds to curry favor in early election states, particularly those that rely on intense retail politics.

Obama has made a point of not accepting money from political action committees, but he created one of his own to help other Democrats.

1. Yet they stiffed their own supporters
In the recent city elections in Manchester, NH, the Obama campaign donated to the Democratic City Committee. This same city committee, heavily dominated by Dodd and Clinton supporters, actively opposed three Obama supporters in what was supposed to be a non-partisan race.

The Obama campaign didn't assist the local candidates who had already announced their support for Obama.

It was a chickenshit move on the part of state director Matt Rodriguez and state chair Jim Demers.
