Who would be Hillary's running mate? Any ideas?
The reason I am asking is because a very important supporter of Hillary's was at my work last week and he says it is going to be Wes Clark.

I had not heard this...

2. I want General Clark in any democratic administration
Although I would prefer he be SECSTATE instead of VP. Condi has left such an incredible mess in that venue that it will take one as competent as General Clark to clean up her trash.

4. I agree 100%, Chief!
My dream ticket was Gore/Clark. In my opinion, there is NO ONE that the rethugs could throw out there that would come close to these guys.

But, I would definitely love to see Clark as Secretary of State. He would be amazing in that position.

3. I think that was the general assumption (about Wes Clar/VP) when he came out
and endorsed her. He's also said a few things since then that just kind of sound like he's part of the 'team'.

5. Well considering the MSM is shoving Hillary down our throats
as the candidate, even before Hillary announced, I believe it was Chris Matthews who said that most likely Clark would be anyone's VP.

13. It beats getting them on issues
like Nuclear power, immigration, SS, etc. Someone here on DU was right about one thing; that Edwards' contribution to the JJ dinner would be deep sixed, it was.

6. Since he's a Clinton loyalist and has a good record, I've thought Clark has the inside track.
Edited on Tue Nov-13-07 03:09 PM by Basileus Basileon
However, the Democrats may look to go domestic this campaign, and if they do Clark won't be much help.

Richardson I thought was running a close second, but I'm not sure if the Clintons would want to bring such a bad campaigner on board, despite his record. Edwards wouldn't be picked again; he proved in '04 he's not a boost. Obama, I think, has blown whatever shot he had at the VP slot with this campaign. Warner would be interesting, but he's obviously got other plans right now.

8. It could be
I've always thought it would be Bill Richardson or someone from the midwest, like Evan Bayh. Richardson has pretty much sucked though as a campaigner.

I'm not sure they'd go with Clark unless they thought he could swing some purple states into the blue column... maybe he can, I don't know - but I'm sure whatever choice they make it will be done with an idea toward who helps win, rather than policy.

9. If Hillary is the nominee, she almost certainly
will have to pick a southerner to be her running mate, and Wes Clark probably best fills the bill. Another good possibility is Jim Webb of Virginia, he is popular in that state and Virginia is one of the few southern states the Democrats have a real chance of winning next year. FDR was nominated for Vice president in '20 based on his job as under secretary of the Navy during WW I, so Webb's having been Secretary of the Navy will augment his two years in the Senate. Another possibility is Phil Bredesen of Tennessee, the popular two term governor. He won re-election with over 70% of the vote.

21. Why a southern?
No Dem is going to win the south just cause they have a southern on the ticket. Also, the Dems don't really need the south.

27. Name one Democratic President who was elected
without carrying a single southern state. There haven't been any. Mathematically it is possible to win the White House without the south but it would be very difficult. Andrew Johnson was not elected, he became president after Lincoln died.

12. I doubt it would be Clark. It doesn't make any sense.
To anyone outside the political-junkie circle, Clark is very old news.

My guess is that she'd pick from one of her current competitors, probably one from the Midwest or West. Bill Richardson and Barack Obama are both good bets.

14. Hillary has been too much of a sell out
To make her believable, it'd help if she nominated someone like Edwards or Clark. Best to energize the base, Dennis Kucinich. Today's poll shows a majority of Democrats want Cheney impeached.

19. I had not heard that, I hope not
If he is up to the task physically, he would be a wonderful Vice-Presidential candidate. He is certainly more conservative (generally) in his views than Senator Clinton but is extremely intelligent and articulate.

25. Some safe, centrist white guy with strong executive creds. I'd say a Mark Warner/Evan Bayh type.
Here's those I don't see it happening for:

Bill Richardson--too Hispanic--besides he's strayed off the reservation on Iraq. Now matter how much he tries to be the grownup in the presidential field the best he's going to do is Secretary of State--if that.

Barack Obama--As we say in Jersey Fuggeddaboutit! If you were Hillary would you want all that charisma and natural talent in the number 2 spot. She's got enough trouble holding her own with Bill. Besides a woman and a black on the same ticket? Not for cautious Clinton.

John Edwards--See above and double down. He's just burnt his bridges with that remark about maybe not supporting her.

Joe Biden--Talks too much.

Chris Dodd--Maybe...he's a white guy. (Naah, not gonna happen)

Wes Clark--Too independent.

28. I doubt Wes Clark would be it. She needs a base-broadener
Strangely enough, Edwards would be just the right balance. What about Gary Locke or Dick Durbin?

Or Kathy Sebelius!
