ASHEVILLE — About 250 people crowded into Malaprop’s Café and Bookstore on Sunday evening while another 50 stood outside the store for a chance to hear from presidential candidate Rep. Dennis Kucinich.

The 61-year-old congressman from Ohio was in town to attend his friend Ani DiFranco’s concert at the Civic Center and to share his message of peace and return to democracy with supporters both at Malaprop’s and at the concert.

“I think he puts the heart and soul back into the candidacy,” said David Schweizer, of Asheville. “He’s the only guy truly talking about peace, and that’s what attracts me to him.”

Kucinich drew wild cheers and applause when he took the microphone with some supporters beginning to chant “Impeach Cheney.” Kucinich has backed a resolution to impeach the vice president, whom he accuses of purposely leading the country into war against Iraq and manipulating intelligence about Iraq’s ties with al-Qaida.

The resolution was referred to the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday but not before Kucinich got a chance to read into the record three articles of impeachment against the vice president.

“When I put forth those articles of impeachment, it wasn’t simply about a statement about the fact that Mr. Cheney lied to take us into war,” he said. “He did. But it is because our nation deserves public officials at the highest level to ascribe to the high standards that are in this constitution.”

1. Great! That is the first and only mention of the Impeachement
Resolution in an Asheville paper.

2. More:
<snip>

Jason Hurd, president and co-founder of Asheville chapter of the nonpartisan Iraq Veterans Against the War, which was established here three weeks ago, said even though his organization does not back political candidates, “I would like to commend Congressman Kucinich on being the only candidate that I feel will put an immediate end to this illegal and immoral war.”

Justin Charlebois and Robert Atwood probably came farther than anyone else at Malaprop’s to hear Kucinich speak Sunday. They flew in from Los Angeles, having won a Kucinich campaign raffle to have dinner with the candidate and his wife, Elizabeth, and attend the DiFranco concert.

“I support him because he’ll say what he’s standing for,” Charlebois said.

“He won’t skirt around the issues like Hillary does or Obama does. As a gay male, when he says he supports gay rights and equal rights, that’s reassuring to have a candidate say that blatantly. Everything that he’s doing is just everything that I’d want a president to do.”

3. “I think he puts the heart and soul back into the candidacy,”
That says it for me, too!
We need him so much!
