Edited on Wed Nov-07-07 11:59 PM by maximusveritas
He's just trying to annoy Obama supporters. But he'll go away eventually if we ignore it.

7. As are you
The difference between us is I've never supported a candidate that welcomed an "ex-gay" clown as the star of his fundraiser to spew homophobic filth and then spend 2 weeks defending the homophobe and his decision.

11. Hitting the paste button in every obama thread doesn't really further your cause
Get some sleep, think up a creative new way to say the same thing, then come back and try again.

hmmm.....drawing a blank.....

14. Yea, that was very disturbing. And you would think Obama
would know better, considering he's a minority.

Funny how that works.

10. I respect and understand that...
While I don't think that Obama meant harm by it, I'd rather take his record on GLBT issues into account instead, I do understand the position of the GLBT community. As a Jew, if my candidate were to invite an ex-Jewish evangelical, committed to converting me onto the stage, I would bristle. I would hope that I would ultimately look at said canidates record, and make my judgement using that as my basis. I couldn't promise I would be able to do that though.

13. I hate to say "what have you done for me lately"
but in this case, it rings true. I look at the record, and then THIS...and wonder if maybe he had some kind of anti-gay epiphany and that is his current stand, despite his record.

I don't think that is the case, and I think he got terrible advice here, but he handled it horribly. And the DUer's who go on saying it's a nothing story etc. only rub salt in the wound.

Shalom.

19. I say it's a nothing story simply for the fact that it hasn't effected his standing.
If you read some of my other posts on the subject, I say that I do not know if that is good or bad for democrats, because like you, I am troubled by his inability to speak out against Mclurken and wonder if it will effect his policy if elected. However, having only his words and his record to go on, I don't not think that this marks a distinct chance in his GLBT position.

However, I respect you opinion, and for my own political curiosity, at this point is there anything he could do to get your vote back?

Full disclosure, I am not an Obama supporter, just very very strongly anti-Hillary, which is why I bristle when Team Hillary trys to redirect their candidates shortcomings back to Obama.

Sorry if I offended.

25. 'is there anything he could do to get your vote back'
Probably not, to be honest. He was certainly amongst my top choices before this, and I think Michelle is fantastic, but this, coupled with his "kingdom on earth" and his almost hyper-religious visibility make me nervous as a gay man. Also, when he criticizes Clinton (and I join you in my distaste for her candidacy) for fighting the "same fights of the 1960's", I want to tell him that civil rights WAS the fight of the 60's, and that wasn't such a bad decade for activism! :)

28. Solid points
and I can't say I blame you for not being able to come back to him. I'm a Biden man right now, but by the time my primary come around (GA) I plan on consolidating behind whoever has emerged as the anti-Hillary candidate. It would be nice if it was Edwards, but if it is Obama, I will vote for him and hope for the best. I know its a tired "meme" right now, but I do have to believe he'd be better then another Republican when it comes to Gay rights. That, coupled with my estimation that Hillary can not win a General Election, would be the only way he would get my primary vote.

I have a lot of love for your guy as well, I just wish he hadn't taken matching funds.

Also, thanks for the civil conversation.

26. Do you think I'm "Team Hillary"
because I would love to disabuse you of that completely erroneous notion

George Wallace had high polling numbers too, especially when he was blocking school doors to prevent black students from going to college.

All Democrats who truly value civil rights and respect the dignity of all our LGBT brothers and sisters should be equally outraged. I am.

29. What I can never understand
is how a politician can build political capital by voting the correct way when dealing with human rights, yet spend that capital unwisely once they run for President.

8. Funny how a Democratic candidate can welcome an "ex-gay" clown to his fundraiser
and let this clown spew homophobic filth for a 1/2 hour and DU'ers here are falling all over themselves trying to first defend it, then justify it, now ignoring it.

Go on and support a candidate who welcomed, with open arms, an "ex-gay" clown bigot. You'll be serving democracy well.

30. I don't see a problem when the OP was as broad as it was.
Now, if the OP had posted about Obama's health care plan for this country, and a random LGBT post popped up, then I'd take umbrage.

There was no need for extensive descriptive text. But you knew that.

But keep defending a serial Obama thread disruptor. I know which side you're on. You see, I've been reading
DU threads very interestedly for the past couple of months.

3. Your man's in the thick of it, Katzenkavalier. In most national polling
he's a respectable second to the leader and he's flush with cash.

For me the larger point is his skill as a speaker.

I favor any Democrat over any Republican, unless the match up is Zell Miller vs. Abraham Lincoln. Absent that wayward contest, the field of blue candidates represents a superior United States than the field of red candidates.

There are more pluses than minuses to our blue team.

If Barack Obama becomes our nominee, IMO the fuel that gets him there will be his gift of language. The Democratic field is very strong in language this time, but of that very strong field, I think Obama has the advantage in language command.
