What we can learn (after the primaries) from Pat Robertson and the GOP in general. . .
Edited on Wed Nov-07-07 07:24 PM by wndycty
Pat Robertson's endorsement of Rudy Giuliani today reinforced what Bill Clinton said at Tom Harkin's Steak Fry back in 2003. To paraphrase he said that Democrats want a candidate they call fall in love with, while Republicans want a candidate they can fall behind.

I don't think we need to fall behind anyone at this point and I want to see a vigorous campaign but once we have a nominee I hope that we can support that individual.

The Republicans have beat us the last two presidential elections because they fell behind someone. Robertson knows that even though Rudy is to the left of what he is comfortable with, he is going to get more from Rudy than he would a Democrat. I hope that once we have a nominee people in our party who are less than thrilled with who we choose will get it too.

4. Democrats have been falling behind in more ways than one for years
It's a variation of the "hold your nose and vote" message.

That was the strategy in 2000 (the old Gore) and 2004.

5. I don't agree that its "hold your nose and vote". . .
. . .I believe that it comes down to priorities. I look at how unhappy the far right was with Bush back in 2000 they felt he was not far enough to the right on many social issues, however they knew that he was much better for their agenda than Gore would have been. At the end of the day a Republican is going to act like a Republican and a Democrat is going to act like a Democrat. I'm not holding my nose and voting for anyone. I'm thrilled with all of the Democrats. My ideal candidate is Obama and I will fight for him as long as I have choice. But if he should come up short in securing the nomination I'm thrilled to work for whomever gets it.

Now I think Robertson back Giuliani too early, however he probably saw the writing on the wall and realizes that his ideal candidate (probably Huckabee) cannot win.

In a primary I don't want Democrats to compromise their beliefs, however I want to see us do a better job of rallying around the eventual nominee.

I think you are probably right.

Giuliani is definitely not what Robertson would normally support as we saw in 1993 when he supported Giulianis opponent for Mayor.

It's not pro-Rudy but anti-Hillary.
