Former Vice President (Mondale) to endorse Clinton
November 4, 2007
Former Vice President to endorse Clinton

DES MOINES, IOWA (CNN) — Former Vice President Walter Mondale will throw his support behind Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-New York, at her first campaign stop Sunday, according to sources close to the campaign.

Word of Mondale's nod was leaked to the press in mid-October, but it will become official around noon at what the campaign is calling an "'Organizing for Change' Event with Special Guest" being held in–where else?–Clinton, Iowa.

Mondale, who served under President Jimmy Carter, ran an unsuccessful bid for the Oval Office himself, in 1984, aiming to defeat incumbent Republican President Ronald Reagan.

Prior to his position as the 42nd vice president, Mondale served two terms as a senator from Minnesota.

3. Well, to be fair to him, he came in 'DEAD' late with no campaign organization
and no personal staff. He's frailer, less vigorous than he was in his younger years. He was trying to fit himself into the campaign of a dead man, in a state that had economic issues, while BushCo was ASCENDANT, RNC money was being spent hand over fist, and economically depressed voters were thinking "If I vote with the GOP, maybe the gravy train will roll this way for a change."

That was the implied promise. Of course, they've had six years almost, and BushCo hasn't delivered, have they?

4. After he had... what...
8 days to campaign? And it was a very close race.

It's a nice capture for Clinton. No need to disparage a fine man because he didn't pick your guy.

5. The headline on CNN left out "Mondale"..
My mood took a dive when I read - former VP endorses Clinton.

I was very relieved to read it was Mondale and not Gore. Though it reminded me how HUGE a Gore endorsement would be for another candidate. My hope is Al will endorse Edwards, as Edwards seems to most closely parallel Al's global warming positions.

I've also heard rumors Al may wait till after the convention to endorse our nominee.

7. Fuck that ageist bullshit.
Do you have ANY evidence that Mondale is senile? This is the same ugly crap that oozed out of DU when McCarthy endorsed her.

20. No, but fortunately that wasn't the main point -- two things:
Edited on Sun Nov-04-07 09:50 PM by HypnoToad
1. People claimed Reagan was senile. Mondale's aged a bit since 1984... Given what I'm about to say, it adds inference to the possibility his crackers are crumbling?

2. Amongst other sources, this one kinda shows Hillary's happy, humongous habit of flip-flopping and pandering whenever the wind shifts direction.

You bet I have concerns about Hillary. If she panders so blatantly for every other major issue out there, and can't even keep it straight in the same debate (proving she's reading cue cards like a mentally deficient parrot) why should I believe her on this one major issue I agree with her on? Lord only knows she's pandering on that camp as well, and if she had to do any diplomatic work, the moment she goofs up on that cue card could mean everybody's done for. Her own experience, in front of the nation, is damning and overwhelming proof.

False. Phony. Charlatan. Chicanery. Don't fall for her siren-like song. It's lethal.

I know people can have a change in philosophy. But that doesn't ring true for Hillary. "Give 'em Hill", indeed. If we give 'em Hill, she'll send us to Hell.

30. So that is your rationalization for calling Walter Mondale senile?
Christ, is everybody on DU really some anti-social malcontent in real life or is it just posters like yourself that give off that false image?

24. Let's see that is the 2nd Democratic elder statesman, Hillary haters have insulted as senile.
With McGovern being the first.

Says quite a bit about yourself.

8. Dems biggest loser
Edited on Sun Nov-04-07 11:57 AM by hawkowl88
Yeah, Mondale is a good person, but he also is the dems biggest loser candidate ever. That is what the public thinks whenever they here "Mondale". So the title should be, "Hillary nets endorsement from dems biggest loser. Ever."

15. Mondale's history is something to be proud of
A side kick to Hubert Humphrey in the Civil Rights era. taking on Reagan in 84. It is a pretty uphill battle unfortunately. No matter who won. Can 't say I agree with Mondale's Hillary endorsement. He can't agree with her on the war and I suspect he wishes her more a real Democrat. But, he still speaks to the finest qualities of the Democratic party.

26. actually, Mondale did better in the popular vote than McGovern
While Mondale got four fewer electoral votes than McGovern (13 v 17) both only won a single state plus DC. In addition, Mondale managed to win his own home state, something that McGovern failed to accomplish. All told, Mondale garnered 40 percent of the vote or more in 18 states; McGovern only topped the 40 percent mark in 12 states.

36. Can agree with you on that.
Mondale could have been easily sent to Korea during his service period. The current bunch were in positions where they were safe and protected from the possibility of Vietnam service.

Mondale is a decent man and I give him credit for returning home to live in Minneapolis after his time in DC.

Edwards is really the only viable alternative to Hillary.
Obama has the baggage of muslim father, Hussein for middle name,

28. After all the old Cold Warriors here, maybe little Hill can get a couple . . .
Old Russian generals.

Mondale has been out the game so long, his dandruff has dandruff. (He had dandruff so bad during the 1984 campaign his suit looked like it had snowed in July.)

Was always a shadow to HHH.

Besides, endorsements don't matter in Iowa. Little Hill got former Governor Vilsack and LOST GROUND!

BTW, where are the endorsements from the people who had to ACTUALLY lock horns with the Clintons, like Tom Daschle? Oh, never mind, I see Tom Daschle endorsed Obama! Speaks volumes about the Clinton legacy and little Hill.

ABC!

ABC!
