'LET'S GO CHANGE THE WORLD'
Speech at historic S. Carolina courthouse recalls 2004 Democratic Convention address

November 4, 2007
JENNIFER HUNTER jhunter@suntimes.com

MANNING, S.C. -- It was as impassioned as the speech he delivered before the 2004 Democratic Convention, and if it was meant to quell doubts about his ability to be presidential, it was convincing.

It was the most inspiring, the most elegant speech I have ever heard Barack Obama give. And he never even mentioned Hillary Clinton.

His talk on civil rights before a largely African-American crowd here Friday, on the steps of the Clarendon County Courthouse was designed to embolden black voters to believe a black man -- at this moment in history -- can become president of the United States.

"So, the brothers and sisters out there who are telling folks we can't win, don't defeat yourselves," he encouraged. "Yes, we can."

It was the same rousing line that the South Side Democrat used in his successful 2004 campaign for the U.S. Senate.

5. Too BAD Obama has an allergy to telling the TRUTH
and excerpt from his speech:

"Barack Obama said today that a presidential ticket led by Sen. Hillary Clinton would be destined to largely repeat the disappointing Democratic performances of 2000 and 2004 and could aspire only to eke out a victory.'

"Obama predicted that if the Democrats nominate Clinton "you’re going to basically see a repetition of the 2000 and 2004 elections, in the sense that the country’s divided and both parties will be working at the margins to tip the election just barely in their favor."

The Republicans STOLE the election from Gore and did the same to Kerry. Everything coming out of Obama's crooked mouth is pure Republican propaganda. Why doesn't he run as a Republican, he wears their mantra WELL!

6. Wait a minute...
Before a largely African American crowd..why was that mentioned. I think the Obama supporters on this DU had a crap fit when it was mentioned that Hillary Clinton gave a rally before a crowd of mostly women....over and over we heard Clinton yeah, she was playing the gender card. What in the hell could you say about Obama's rally.

You know what makes this all the more offensive. Obama has all the right in the world to appear when and where ever and with who he pleases. BUT BY THE SAME PREMISE, SO DOES HILLARY. But you see all the bitching and moaning the other supporters did.

9. I think you deliberately misunderstand the difference between talking about . . .
. . .race and gender vs. using the race or gender card.

When Hillary openly complains about getting picked upon because she is a woman is playing the gender card, when Hillary talks about it being time a woman is elected, talks about the different perspective a woman brings to the presidency she is talking about gender.

You can try to define the argument any way you want to benefit your candidate, but there is a huge difference between playing the gender/race card and talking about gender/race. But do what you got to do to make your weak point and fake argument.

13. Actually, it was in 2003
and your comparison is truly weak.

Dean's comment was that the white Southerners who had been voting consistently for Republicans since the mid-60's were voting against their self-interest. He said that if those voters truly valued what was important (health care, jobs, education for their children) over facile racist overtures and fear-mongering, they should be voting Democratic.

Dean never welcomed an "ex-gay" clown to his campaign event, gave him a microphone and a 1/2 to spew homophobic filth and then spend a week defending this clown. Obama has eagerly pandered to bigots and homophobes by welcoming them into his campaign. It's a grave insult, not just to the LGBT community, but also to straight Democrats who value civil rights.
