David Brooks NYT casts Hillary as Col. "You can't handle the truth" Jesep

His OpEd parodying the debate is of course not friendly to the Dems. He takes shots at just about everyone. At the end he uses the "You can't handle the truth" speech of Col. Jesep in A Few Good Men but inserting Hillary as Jesep. The satirized point being that Hillary is likely the toughest we got to go against the repukes. It made me laugh so I thought I would share it.

I will just post that section, if you want to read the rest of his dem attacking its at the nyt opinion section.

WILLIAMS: Now we turn to our lightning round in which each of the candidates will have 3.75 seconds to spout pandering clichés that demonstrate how the campaigning process has reduced their minds to pabulum. Senator Clinton, which issue would you like to obfuscate next?

CLINTON: Obfuscate? Son, let me tell you the truth, because you can’t handle the truth. We live in a world with enemies. We fight elections where people play rough. Who’s going to do it? These two pretty boys? The left-wing nutjobs in our party who sit around watching Bill Maher?

I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, leads to victory. Because deep down, in places you don’t talk about in Santa Monica dinner parties, you want me at that podium. You need me at that podium. And I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to the self-righteous liberals who rise and sleep under the blanket of the very victory I provide! I wish you’d just said thanks and went on your way. In any case, I don’t give a damn what answers you think you’re entitled to!

3. Col Jessup was a loon

His meltdown was not supposed to be a great man defending an uncomfortable truth. In that scene he was exposed as an over-the-top nutjob who had lost all ability to distinguish between goals and methods.

4. Sure, but are you saying that

the character would not have come off better had he not broken the law? The reason the scene and his line is memorable is because there are times when people "can't handle the truth".

5. The point was that he did disregard the law and values

Had the backstory to that scene been an incident where Jessup did the right thing despite it being technically against the rules, then he would have been a hero and the line "You can't handle the truth" would have had a different meaning.

But the plot was that he had participated in something clearly wrong, and which was only justified in his own mind by his blind fanaticism. So the "truth" wasn't really the truth. It was a madman's truth.

and Brooks chose this in part because it is not a flattering portrait, I still think its interesting that he viewed Hillary as the "rough and tough character".

7. Alas, none of the Democrats are tough in the right sense

Unfortunately, none of the democratic nominees have that ability to convey tough strength with common sense and our better values in their political personas.

Frankly, that's where I miss the presence of the guy in your screen name. In terms of foreign and military policy, he's da man.
