Rudy Giuliani On Freedom
Edited on Sun Nov-04-07 09:07 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
"Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful society a great deal of discretion about what you do....Authority protects freedom. Freedom can become anarchy."

Sounds more like Il Duce than an American political leader...

Keep focusing on minutiae like "gender cards"...I'll focus on what's important; defeating Il Duce...

1. Its the authoritarian mindset, and its dangerous...
The government is supposed to serve the people, not the other way around.

2. There Was A Great Article In The New Republic On The Ghoul
Edited on Sun Nov-04-07 09:15 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
He's scary... Of course there is an authoritarian component to conservatism with its reverence for tradition and skepticism about what individuals would do with their freedom... I even empathize, to a very, very, very small bit with it but Rudi's thinking puts him firmly outside of conservatism and within the fascist tradition...

He's much scarier than a Bush* because he has a brain...

3. He is more dangerous than Il Dunce...
The problem with people like the Ghoul is that they believe everyone operates from a selfish mindset similar to himself. The fact is that that isn't really true, not when looking at the whole picture, otherwise Democratic society would be impossible to organize at all. The fascist, authoritarian, mindset is innately flawed because it relies too much on a "strongman" a person with absolute power. It relies on the active suppression of the populace, and on the restriction of ideas.

Traditions act as a type of suppression, an Orthodoxy, if you will, that can't be opposed without committing "blasphemy". This isn't necessarily religious in nature, it could be cultural or political as well. Traditions can be fine, as long as they don't impede on progress, then they become tools of suppression against the population at large.

7. Franklin seemed to have hit on an essential truth with that statement...
Edited on Sun Nov-04-07 10:45 AM by Solon
and that truth is that Freedom involves insecurity. To have freedom means to deal with the dangers inherent in allowing it in the first place. Think of our current problems with just crime, for example, we could tag every person in the nation, and track their movements, and that could drastically reduce all different sorts of crimes. However, the freedom to have some sort of privacy on your person would be sacrificed for it. That's unacceptable to most people, though far too many would probably accept it as well. We could do something like that, right now, but we don't, so all of us, to maintain our freedom, should accept the risk that we could be a victim of a crime.

Its a delicate balance, freedom on one end of the scale, and security on the other, some want to tilt in toward the security end, others to the freedom end, I would like it to be balanced.
