Kerry and his merry 'Band of Brothers'
KERRY AND HIS MERRY 'BAND OF BROTHERS'
Mary Lynn F. Jones, AlterNet

Veterans are emerging as one of the single most important constituencies in this wartime election -- and it isn't good news for Bush.

2. the article ends:
...Bush's service record has become a political liability during a wartime election. In 2000, an entire night of the Republican National Convention was devoted to honoring the nation's military and its veterans, which included 1996 candidate Bob Dole, Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.), and retired Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf.

"A president has no higher duty than to keep the peace and protect American lives," Bush told the crowd that night. "Morale in our military today is dangerously low. Our men and women in uniform need better pay, better training and better equipment. As commander in chief, I will rebuild America's military and strengthen our alliances." This time around, any such ceremony would only underline the hollowness of Bush's rhetoric.

It is no wonder that Kerry has only three words for George Bush: Bring it on!

3. These Vets got the shaft.
65,000 names are on the Wall in Washington. The survivors got the shaft regarding this 13 or so year debacle. I would like to see more done for this group of guys, than the corporate thugs and wall street millionaires, who seem to have been treated quite deferentially for much too long, in general.

4. Many vets
have told me that working on Kerry's campaign has been bringing them a sort of "peace", if you will, with the way they were treated and ignored when they returned to the states. One told me that if Kerry becomes president he will no longer feel shame for being a Vietnam vet. I felt so sad that he felt that way. :(

And welcome to DU, Madame. :hi:

5.  I'm happy that the Vietnam Vets finally get the "last laugh!"
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 12:00 PM by sleipnir
They've had such a rough ride from the beginning, most recently from the right-wing which refused to support, and actually CUT!, their benefits.

These men (and some women!) will finally get to right America and get the respect and benefits they deserve. They're going to have the last laugh at the right-wingers!
