Yes, it's The Washington Times (R-Moonie) but a great article!

(...)

Top religious rights activists have been burning up the telephone lines, sharing what one privately called their "apoplexy" over Mr. Bush's failure to act decisively on the issue, although he has said he would support a constitutional amendment if necessary to ban same-sex "marriages."

"I am just furious over what's going on in California and over what the president is not doing in California," a prominent evangelical leader confided. "He says he's 'troubled' — he should be outraged. If he's troubled, he should pick up the phone and call Arnold and tell him we want action against the rogue mayor who is breaking the law."

"They can't possibly guarantee a large turnout of evangelical Christian voters if he does not do what is morally right and take leadership on this issue as he did on the war" in Iraq, said CWA President Sandy Rios.

(...)

"I'm not blaming the president, but religious conservatives have been doing politics for 25 years and, on every front, are worse off on things they care about," said Gary Bauer, president of American Values. "The gay rights movement is more powerful, the culture is more decadent, the life of not one baby has been saved, porn is in the living room, and you can't watch the Super Bowl without your hand on the off switch."

(...)

I LOVE THIS LINE:

Religious right leaders say their constituents aren't likely to defect to the Democrats.

1. Maybe Roy Moore win run against *
I just read that Roy Moore (de-robed Ten Commandments judge) may run for president this year. Even if he only manages to scare up enough votes from his most passionate followers, I say thee yea, Roy!

Those Constitution Party folks were spotted in Baltimore after the religious icon (10 commandments) deal, passing out flyers downtown. There was always one man, who did the talking to passersby, while several ankle-length-denim-skirted, coffee filter-headed women worked a block at a time. They wanted signatures for a ballot initiative.

After four hours of observing from a distance, I never saw anyone sign anything.

I suppose that Roy’s Constitution Party platform will consist of the gospel according to Paul, along with a few choice Old Testament fear-of-eternal flames-of-woe inducing tidbits. If Roy wants to run an “I’m a better Christian than you are, George W.!“ campaign, pass the popcorn. I’m on the edge of my seat.

With visions of idol-worshipping devotees on their knees, praying fervently to the artist-commissioned big rock monument, still fresh in my mind (Thanks, cable news networks!), I can’t imagine a more entertaining rightwing primary season.

So, who’s the better Christian, Bush or Moore? Frankly, I don’t give a Jesus On A Pogo Stick. However, if Roy can garner enough votes to keep BushCo from cheating in even one contested state this year, I’ll pray that he wins.

Note: no offense to coffee filters intended.

5. I emailed Judge Moore and BEGGED
him to run to save our country from the evil, non-religious Democrats. I think ALL DUers should email him. He IS actually thinking about a run. Maybe DUers could help him make a decision.

2. Outstanding!
The Republican Party platform can back a constitutional amendment banning both same-sex marriage and civil unions, and lose some of their moderate voters (many of whom are already wavering over jobs and the deficit). Or they can back a ban on marriage, but say civil unions are up to the states, and lose many of their conservatives who oppose both marriage, and "marriage-lite". Upset Republican moderates might vote for a Democrat, but upset conservatives sure won't.

The Dems could back a platform which allows both marriage and civil unions, and maybe lose a few moderates who don't like marriage. Or they could back only civil unions, which will lose a few very liberal folks who want marriage or nothing. Neither Dem moderates nor liberals are likely to vote for Bush.

The Democratic Primary winner will have a net gain on this issue any way you slice it.

11. Exactly!
This is what I've been saying all a long. The gay marriage issue is a issue that Bush will LOSE on. If he comes out against gays then the Democratic Nominee can paint him as a gay basher, and he'll lose support among moderates and in particular moderate women. (Who, after all, doesn't have at least one gay relative?) No matter which way you cut it Bush is going to get the short end of the stick so I *HOPE* he makes this an issue.

3. Question
What President WILL give you gay marriage? I am being serious, not trying to provoke.

I just don't see a president who is progressive enough coming in the next 10 years.

6. my guess is
all other things remaining the same, the right wing will force this issue in a fashion that goes through the courts for the next 10 years, with civil unions ultimately coming out. (The "all other things remaining the same" should be self-explanatory.)

But whatever the legal outcome, you will probably have a couple of million gay couples who will marry in churches that will set up shop extra special for this purpose.

So two separate realities will coexist for a while.

7. my guess is
all other things remaining the same, the right wing will force this issue in a fashion that goes through 88 courts and countermotions for the next 10 years, outcome uncertain. ("All other things remaining the same" accounting for the possibility that we will have the Rapture before then.)

But whatever the legal outcome, a couple of million gay couples will soon be marrying in churches that set up shop just for this purpose.

So I guess two separate realities will coexist for a while.

4. Armies of Gays
who want to take over your country and your schools and adopt babies and bring God down on this country. That's the strategy the far right will use on this issue. They will speak of it in the churches and pray for the soul of America. It will give the right an issue to rally around above all other pesky issues that divide the ranks. On the plus side, the repetitive rhetoric and hard line message will turn off those in the middle who are wise enough to know there is a much bigger picture to consider. As long as we can keep issues like the economy, accountability, and cronyism at the forefront of the national dialogue, we have a chance.

FYI: Roy won several thousand votes in the Oklahoma primary.

8. Every time I surf past Fox News, it's gay marriage...
terror, or the drama and success of the war in Iraq. Fox is part and parcel of the Bush campaign, firing up those red-state voters.

9. There are no more red states.
Oh, okay, Utah. And Indiana.
