This is part one of a several part series I'm going to do for no other reason than I feel like it.
Keep in mind that I am a Kerry supporter now, having supported Dean, then Clark, then Dean again...and now Kerry.
Anyway, many compare Kerry to JFK. Personally all I think the two have in common are their state, their initials and the knowlege that they would someday be president. I think a comparison to LBJ is more apropos. The two were consumate insiders, both having served long terms in the Senate, and both were owed favors. Both are/were ruthless campaigners, and both were decorated war heroes. Also both are activist, in that LBJ got things done, and Kerry will get things done.
- The Iraq war will scale down. Slowly, and many Democrats will argue its not fast enough. At the end of his first term, expect there to be minimal troops. Also expect chaos in Iraq. Republicans will blame this on Kerry but it won't stick - there is chaos now. This is unavoidable - Iraq will be in chaos no matter who is president, be it Bush, Kerry, Kucinich, Dean or Edwards. The only thing that could avert this would be UN involvement and even then they will have a big anvil dropped in their laps.
- Kerry will pass a healthcare reform act which will be the biggest this country has ever seen. It will not be single-payer, but it will rival Johnson's War on Poverty in scope. Despite Republican opposition, they will cave by a narrow margin - being as how many owe Kerry.
- The Department of Homeland Security will grow. Expect to see more national control of our local police departments. Under Kerry this will be benign, however this power when left to Republicans will be dangerous.
- The economy will improve, and there will be more jobs in the US. Kerry will keep NAFTA, but will work changes to it. Expect many of these changes as hidden items in bills having nothing to do with NAFTA as to get them passed.
- Democrats will take back the Senate in 2006.
- Kerry will appoint a pro-choice, centrist to the Supreme Court. Despite him or her being a centrist, Republicans will balk and Democrats will say he or she is not far enough to the left.
- Iraq will fester in the background. Quite possibly they will fall to Islamic rule. If this is to happen, again, no president could have averted it (short of not invading.) This might taint Kerry's legacy, even though it was Bush's war.
- In 2012 a Republican will be elected President.
OK...the floor is now open to questions. Personally I think this is the best scenario for our country, despite the pitfalls that await.
ON EDIT: I meant pro-choice, not pro-life
sorry!
