Congradulations to John Edwards
I've been dead wrong on everything political the last six months, including writing off John Edwards a long time ago.

I like what he is saying. I like the message and I like, maybe more, the man. I'm doubtful I will vote for him in the PA primary, but I will be happy if he is the next POTUS. I'd work really really hard for him in the GE.

I've heard people say that they REALLY like that he is the son of a mill worker. That seems to go a long way, as it should. Among us have-nots, that is quite a charming piece of background.

Nice work, Senator Edwards. Good luck to you!

11. Who cares
Seriously, who cares if his dad was a manager or a line-worker? He's still a worker in a mill. Seriously, getting a little desperate for material.

15. link please, including the date on which Edwards Sr. achieved this
status?

I've heard this claim made a few times but have never seen the support for it.

9. Why should being the son of a mill worker mean anything?
If I were telling my story, I would tell how I worked my way through college with a husband and a baby. I would tell how hard it was to keep up with everything so that I could make a better life for my family. I would tell how I absolutely would not have made it without having my mother-in-law to care for my child. I would tell how I sometimes did not see my child for 48 hours at a time b/c I went to college, work, sleep, back to college, back to work, and back to sleep. I would tell how when I lost my job, I relied on food stamps for a month so I could feed my child until my husband's work started back up and I could find another job.

Being the son or daughter of someone who worked hard means nothing to me. My dad worked hard to get ahead too. But, I worked hard myself to make a better life for MY family.

My husband is the son of an alcoholic. Is he an alcoholic? No, he's a very hard-working man who goes to work no matter what. He has worked with his arm in a sling. I had to force him to go to the hospital when he was about to fall down one day. I had to force him NOT to go to work. He had pnuemonia.

My point is that parents do not define the person. They may help shape them but, in the end, children become their own people.

13. JRE can tell a similar story. He also worked his way through college.
Edited on Thu Feb-19-04 10:42 PM by spooky3
He has lost a son through a horrible accident, and managed to come back from that.

You DO deserve a lot of credit for what you have done. I think Edwards is trying to say that he understands what you have done because he has lived a self-made life that is similar to yours also.

I don't think that he's trying to make the point that parents define the person. I think he is responding to and trying to pre-empt the inaccurate perception that many people who know much less than you do about the candidates have--that he is a rich lawyer who must have been born with a silver spoon in his mouth, so how could he know anything about the middle class? They look at his current reality rather than how he got there. His millworker story is just a shorthand way of doing this and it DOES resonate with a lot of people.

And by the way, I have yet to see a link to any evidence that his dad was a manager in a mill throughout much--or even any--of his career. His dad probably worked his way up too (not your claim, but something others have claimed).

14. Edwards Is The Son Of A Textile Mill Manager
Edited on Thu Feb-19-04 10:44 PM by cryingshame
who went on to own his own Textile Mill Consulting business.

He grew up comfortable in the Middle Class.

What does it say about Edwards' that his signature line is a LIE?

16. Your source for this
information about Edwards' dad being a "Manager" at a mill is what exactly?

I really would appreciate where the source for that is?
