Where did I hear the Obama-McClurkin fiasco was being ignored by the MSM?
Top story on CNN Politics:

Obama's gospel concerts raise hornet's nest of a dilemma

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (CNN) -- Democratic Sen. Barack Obama kicked off a series of local outreach gospel concerts Friday in Charleston, South Carolina, that unexpectedly came back to bite his campaign.

The concerts were meant to boost black voters' support for his presidential nominee bid -- the kind of events that would normally fly under the national radar.

The ensuing controversy highlighted that Obama's desire to unite disparate voting blocs -- especially religious voters -- under his umbrella of "change" is not without some serious pitfalls.

<snip>

When the story bubbled up into the mainstream media, it took the Obama campaign by surprise.

<snip>

The campaign has vigorously promoted the candidate's faith ... Campaigners have run three radio ads, one of which called Obama a "Christian family man," that aired on gospel stations across the state.

<snip>

But on Tuesday, Obama was forced to confront the uncomfortable truth that some Christians and gays are a little more than just strange bedfellows, especially among blacks. ...

Guess it didn't "fly under the national radar" after all.

1. Apparently this was gonna be a non-story.
No one was going to pay attention to this non-issue.

The MSM was going to ignore this.

Ooops.

Sorry we're fighting to equality.

25. I was told here on DU that "nobody but you cares about this"
Some people wallow in self righteous denial.

2. That's what I was told when I mentioned AP had picked up the story.
Never make it to the 'big time' MSM.

3. I think some of the blowhard, egomaniac pundits
(cough*ChrisMatthews*cough) may have tried to keep it buried, but they didn't realize what a groundswell the discontent would quickly generate!

5. Excellent. I admit to being pessimistic that the story had legs....
I also thought Obama had enough political acumen to adjust course and fix the problem. Aapparently I was wrong on all counts.

10. So 62% of blacks say same-sex acts are "Strongly Unacceptable"
Edited on Sun Oct-28-07 01:15 AM by Bluebear
Is this supposed to point out some sort of enlightenment? Is McClurkin's appearance meant to pander to that constituency? Reinforce their opinion?

11. I was very surprised by that
That's way higher than I expected. The negative responses add up to 74.1%. I'd love to hear an explanation for that if anyone's from South Carolina.

13. It certainly must stem from a religious/cultural teaching.
I did read a study which said that African-Americans are actually far more comfortable with gays than the polls suggest, that they may give a poll answer which is "correct" but in reality they are more liberal in their beliefs. I hope so. To the last person, my straight African-American work colleagues and friends are very live and let live on this topic.

18. That, and gain votes for Obama
This whole "bring people together" crap has been just that--crap. Obama is vote whoring among the bigots and nothing more. Why else would he select five homophobes for his gospel tour?

12. Some things are just too big
This hurts him in so many, many ways. Not only is it disturbing to see and hear so many people poo-pooing it, it's surprising to see them not realize it for the disaster that it is.

Can you say Donnie Rice?

It's too early to tell yet, but this is truly serious. Talk about a story: it's got race, religion AND it's got a little bit about that naughty subject, too.

THE MOST ENDURING OBSTACLE FOR MINORITY CANDIDATES is, and always has been, that they would put their "group" above others. They played the Catholic card against Kennedy, they tarred Cuomo with intimations of Mafia ties and they're dancing around bringing up the gender issue about Senator Clinton at the moment, but just you wait: it'll happen sooner or later if she's nominated.

It's hard to not interpret Senator Obama's moves as precisely that: putting his group above others, whether that group is interpreted as race or religion or the two together.

His reaction has been to play both sides of the issue by bringing in a gay preacher, but this is mealy-mouthed double-dealing of such a degree that even Senator Clinton couldn't pull it off. It's just too big.

Some things you just can't be on both sides of; perhaps he's learned a wrong lesson from the Senator from New York.

It's going to sour him with some of the religious people who would have been swayed but who are bigots, and it's not going to assuage the detractors. No matter how nimble one is, some issues necessitate a firm stand, and this one is a classic.

17. I'm speechless and will never understand why Obama didn't dump him right away.
A quick recognition of a mistake and a fix would have made this disappear before it blew up and became a huge media issue.

He is following the Bush approach to mistakes by never changing course...big campaign mistake and bad followup approach.

Disappointing to me as I had him as my close second to Hillary.

21. I know - I took part in many of those discussions. (This was in answer to: Where did I hear
that the story was being ignored on the MSM?
To me, the logical answer to that question would be "Nowhere.")

A dud of a retort, I guess.
