Proposal to Exchange Michigan Primary for Caucus

With Michigan's presidential primary under fire, lawmakers are calling for change.

Representative Martin Griffin has introduced a bill to replace the state primary with a caucus. That means the republican and democratic parties would run the elections, saving Michigan about 10-million dollars. It's money Griffin says should never have been given out in the first place.

Rep. Martin Griffin, (D) Jackson: "It was a charade. It was a waste of 10 million dollars and we need to end it. We need to go back to the caucus system that we've used for the last number of primaries and move forward."

1. Washington is in the same boat

All of the parties here hold caucuses for selecting delegates to the National Convention and the nomination of a Presidential candidate, even though state law requires a primary. The Republicans select one half of their delegates based on the primary results and one half based on the caucuses. The Democrats have never paid any attention to the primaries and have always selected all of their delegates based on the caucuses.

Our state presidential primaries are nothing more than Hoover sucking millions of dollars away from projects that actually do have a purpose.
