These are pretty good times for our party. Bush has been on the ropes for months now, and polls show that the relentless attacks by all of the candidates are having their desired effect.

Right now though, I'm seeing signs of a trend toward irrational exhuberance (pardon me Mr. Greenspan) among many DUers. A new CNN poll shows that BOTH Kerry and Edwards would beat Bush, if the election were held now. This is reason to get excited, but let's not get carried away.

Unfortunately, the election isn't being held now. And more unfortunately Bush has only now begun to unleash the full apparatus of his re-selection machine. Let's not forget that he ran his father's dirty tricks campaign during Bush 1's bid for the white house and excelled at it. Let's not forget how he slimed his way into the Texas governors mansion. And let's not forget what he did to John McCain and finally the 2000 election.

Let's not fool ourselves into a false sense of security, or worse yet smug complacency. Whoever becomes our nominee (and it looks like Kerry) must realize that they are in for the political fight of their life. He will have to jump into the mud pit and get mad dog mean, or the Bush camp will be licking their chops. And as for us? We need to keep up the support, keep sending donations or continue to donate our time to our cause. We have to stay interested and engaged, and not let up for a minute, because, come September, if we have done ALL of that, we may just be tied with him in the polls. We have a mountain to climb, people. Let's not forget that.
