Do you want to get on my nerves?
Here's your chance.

Use the word "thee".

I mean, wtf is up with that? It's 2007 fer chrissakes. And this is GD-Politics, not the Middle Earth Forum. Or do we have a lot of Wiccans posting in here? And even if so, does the Wiccan handbook say you have to type Old English words into your computer when posting to the internet? And aside from DragonCon attendees and gamers, we had gotten to the point where the only place you saw those words were in religious ceremonies and texts and the odd historical movie or book. Which is where they belong. The language has evolved. Embrace it.

And how come we never see "thou"? Or "thence"? Or "whence"? I mean, if you're going to go down this road, at least give us some variety. But be careful of that slippery slope... What's next? Big buckles on our shoes? Men wearing exposed hosiery?

It's bad enough we have to put up with our government rejecting science and technology, but we don't have to fall into the psychology trap they are creating and revert to 400 year old speech patterns. Resist! Chrome on your car is OK! Electricity makes a lot of things possible! There are other fabrics besides wool!

Now back to my coffee.

9. Yes of course. But hopefully a couple of things could happen.
Posts like yours will encourage more posters to more fully use the phraseology, lessening the jarring impact of the random word or short phrase thrown into the middle of an otherwise modern English thread.

Or,

everyone gets this out of their system and we get back to living, breathing, modern English.

Or,

I become immune to the irritation from extensive exposure.

Or,

After a few minutes of hilarity and some more coffee, we all go back to our regularly scheduled activities.

I'll join forces if you add the much-used "f***" to your list. It has some link to that era as well.

16. You want to get on my nerves?
Use "prolly" for "probably"

Oh! Oh! Even worse, use the wrong pronoun to describe yourself when you are discussing some action attributed to you and another person. Then put the pronoun describing yourself in front of the pronoun describing the other person.

21. Quakers use "thee" and "thou," but among themselves.

I haven't seen anyone using "thee" here. But a lot of people are using "per say" when they mean "per se." 'Tis Latin and sounds like "per say" but is spelled "per se." A tip from an old Latin scholar. :hippie:

And what's up with the media saying "He pleaded 'Guilty' " instead of "He pled 'Guilty' "? Is that acceptable usage now?

39. Actually...
hardly any of us do any more. I'm a birthright Friend, past my half-century mark, and that really was more my grandparents' generation. Nowadays if you hear Quakers using the plain speech, more often than not they are just goofing around. Or possibly hooked either on the King James Bible or Tolkien.

I object to people, particularly advertisers & media people who tell me I live in "Sanny Eggo". I even heard national news people (during our 15 minutes
of fire fame) mispronouncing San Diego (thats Dee Ay Go).
