Mark Warner Raises $1.1M for Senate Run

RICHMOND, Oct. 15 -- Democrat Mark R. Warner raised more than $1 million for his bid for the U.S. Senate in less than three weeks, according to reports filed Monday with the Federal Election Commission.

Warner, a former governor, entered the race for the seat of retiring Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.) on Sept. 13.

Between his announcement and Sept. 30, the close of the latest federal campaign finance reporting period, Warner collected about $1.1 million, with no major organized fundraising events. He has about $1 million in the bank.

"We're gratified by the early and enthusiastic support Governor Warner is receiving. Virginians are responding to his approach of bringing people together in a bipartisan way to bring real change to Washington," said Monica Dixon, an adviser to Warner. "This is a great start, and we look forward to building on this momentum throughout the next year of the campaign."

Warner is expected to be unopposed for the Democratic nomination for the Senate.

Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.) and former Virginia governor James S. Gilmore III are considering running for the GOP nomination.
