Republican Mike Johanns scored a big win on the first official day of his U.S. Senate campaign, picking up an endorsement Wednesday from his former subordinate, Gov. Dave Heineman.

Heineman, who once served as then-Gov. Johanns' lieutenant governor, said he was eager to work for his former boss on the campaign trail and in Washington if Johanns is elected.

"Mike Johanns is proven, tested and trusted," Heineman said.

It is a key endorsement for Johanns, 57, who is trying to build support among heavy hitters in the Nebraska Republican Party.

Johanns has previously received words of encouragement from U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel and former Omaha Mayor Hal Daub, who pulled out of the Senate race Sept. 28.

Johanns resigned as governor in January 2005 to accept the job of U.S. agriculture secretary under President Bush.

2. Has Tom Osborne already endorsed Bruning? I'm sure that's coming.
