Clinton Maintains Commanding Lead, Majority of Americans now express favorable view of her
The latest Gallup Poll of nationwide Democrats' preference for their party's 2008 presidential nomination shows New York Sen. Hillary Clinton continuing to hold a commanding lead over Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and the remainder of the Democratic field. Clinton's lead over Obama is 21 percentage points in the current poll and has exceeded 20 points in each of five Gallup polls conducted since the beginning of August.

The Oct. 4-7, 2007, poll finds 47% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents favoring Clinton for the nomination, with 26% supporting Obama. Former senator John Edwards is the only other candidate in double digits, at 11%. Those three candidates account for 84% of the vote, leaving little support for the remaining contenders, led by New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson at 4%.

6. Me three.
Why do i get the feeling that there is a multi million dollar effort
to make everybody think it is over and Clinton has it locked up.

BTW in the democratic and progressive circles I know in Central OH
I know of not one supporter of Hillary.

1981 - 1989
Reagan & H.W. Bush

1989 - 1993
H.W. Bush & Quayle

1993 - 2001
Clinton & Gore

2001 - 2009
W. Bush & Cheney

2009 - 2013
Hillary Clinton & ?

Just a mere 32 (or 36) years of a bush or Clinton in power.

8. What were the previous polls for?
Part of the multi-million dollar effort to make everybody think it is over and Clinton did not have it locked up?

25. Which Americans are they talking to?
I've never been polled nor has anyone in my family.

Plus, if we were polled, we'd vote against Hillary.

Even here in liberal Madison I am hard pressed to find anyone who wants her to win the primary.

11. Some details on the poll
"For results based on the sample of 488 Democrats and Democratic leaners, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±5 percentage points."

A decent poll sample has 1,000+ people and a MOE of 3% or less. I look forward to OP acting like that's not true.

14. The Sample Was A Bit Small And The MOE Was A Bit Large
I wonder what the expense would be of doubling the sample... It's not a question of just calling 488 more people but probably calling ten times as many, given the difficulty of finding qualified respondents...

But it confirms other polls that are out there...

I think that must be wrong.
It may well be that if you call ten people, you only get an average of one respondent.

But the proportion of calls resulting in respondents must be roughly constant, so doubling the sample size should only double the cost.

24. That's the Dem sub-sample. The national "favorable" questions are 1010, MOE 3
They do 1000 person samples and derive both the dem and pug numbers from that national sample. It would be nice to have even larger samples, but this is appropriate for national snapshots like this. More pointedly, the article notes that the Dem numbers are essentially unchanged since August, which would be an amazing coincidence if the method was all that unreliable

"These results are based on telephone interviews with a randomly selected national sample of 1,010 adults, aged 18 and older, conducted Oct. 4-7, 2007. For results based on this sample, one can say with 95% confidence that the maximum margin of error attributable to sampling and other random effects is ±3 percentage points. For results based on the sample of 488 Democrats and Democratic leaners, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±5 percentage points."

17. low points and high points are the benchmarks.
In April, she'd dropped 13% from a high in Feb. Today, she has climbed 6% from a low in April.
