On Stump, Low-Key Thompson Stirs Few Sparks (Freddy's pretty lame)
Edited on Thu Oct-04-07 10:34 AM by hadrons
NEVADA, Iowa, Oct. 3 — Twenty-four minutes after he began speaking in a small restaurant the other day, Fred D. Thompson brought his remarks to a close with a nod of his head and an expression of thanks to Iowans for allowing him to “give my thoughts about some things.”

Then he stood face to face with a silent audience.

“Can I have a round of applause?” Mr. Thompson said, drawing a rustle of clapping and some laughter.

“Well, I had to drag that out of you,” he said.

Mr. Thompson is a former United States senator, television actor and Watergate investigator. His entry into the presidential race was highly anticipated by many Republicans, who saw or hoped to see in him outsized political talent and a commitment to conservatism that would enliven a Republican field that many found lacking.

But as Mr. Thompson campaigned across Iowa this week, he was something other than the dynamic presence that some in his party have been yearning for. Iowans saw a candidate who is subdued and sonorous, a laconic presence who spoke in soft monotone, threw few elbows and displayed little drive to distinguish himself from his opponents.

1. His "fifteen minutes" were actually over in fifteen minutes.
I think that's a first.

nothing can save you, GOP. you are hoist by your own petard.

your best hope for continuation of your failed vision for murka is the most conservative democrat. coincidentally, that's the one that's leading.

4. OH, look: A Hillary smear!
Could you link me to the passages where you extol YOUR candidate? I want to know who this perfect marvel of liberalism is.

10. i don't need to extol the merits of dennis kucinich
saying that hillary is the most conservative democratic candidate is acknowledging the obvious. past the primary, she's got my support 100%. until then, i'm under no obligation.

3. Why is he even running?
I doubt he even WANTS to be President! Why doesn't he just go back to "Law & Order?" This is such an egregious waste of taxpayer money!

6. Thompson's "surge" is more a reaction to the general lameness of the field than anything.
They say he's the farthest "right" of the group but I don't see it. Romney is much more a RW loon than Thompson.

8. Thompson has a surge? Who knew?
Freddy may fold up his tent before Thanksgiving if he keeps surging like this.

7. Give the audience credit for remaining upright--
and more than half have their eyes open. That's gotta count for something.

12. If that is a bookstore, it may be Eeyore.
From Winnie the Pooh. The article references a cafe, but I don't think that is where they are in this particular picture.
