6. Has anyone said Edwards WASN'T electable?
I tend to think that the people who are attracted to Kerry would have no problem with Edwards. Obviously there are exceptions but I can't imagine anyone thinking their were drastic differences between the two beyond the personality traits.

I like Edwards quite a bit. I've never heard anyone who says Kerry is electable say that Edwards wasn't. I think that the foreign policy/military edge that Kerry has makes him slightly more so than Edwards but I think both Johns would have a fighting chance.

Where does Kerry net out in this same poll? (you didn't include a link).

Convenient for that to be left out.

This just proves what I've been saying for a long time. Any of the 9 original candiates could have beaten Dumbya in November.

I do think Clark, Kerry, and Edwards could beat Bush. Dean is a closer call, but I think he could as well.

31. NOT an intentional ommision
i wasn't really watchig the tube but perked up when she stated that poll. she then said "that makes Edwards and Kerry essentially even" or words to that effect.
i didn't want to take a stab at guessing her definition of 'essentially' and i knew i couldn't be the only one watching so the info would be posted.

13. Edwards doesn't have a chance
He doesn't have the money & organization to compete with Kerry. At this point, Kerry pretty much has it in the bag. Both Kerry & Edwards have very similar ideas on domestic & foreign policy. THey are not that different. I like both of them - my money is on Kerry.

Bush Deficit in Horse Race Unusual for Incumbents
Only second incumbent to trail at this stage of campaign

by Jeffrey M. Jones

GALLUP NEWS SERVICE

PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup's most recent trial heat of presidential preferences, from a Jan. 29-Feb. 1 poll, shows President George W. Bush trailing Massachusetts senator and Democratic front-runner John Kerry by a 53% to 46% margin among likely voters. A review of historical trial-heat data from past elections shows it is rare for an incumbent president to be trailing at this stage in a campaign. At the same time, in the eight elections analyzed here, there have been campaigns in which the incumbent led in February but was defeated for re-election in November. As such, it is hard to draw any inferences as to what Bush's current standing means for his re-election prospects.

37. more past matchups Gallup polled in Jan-Feb of election years
In seven other elections for which there are comparable data, the incumbent president led his eventual challenger when voters were asked in January or February about their current voting intentions. It should be noted that in a few elections in which the incumbent eventually won, such as those of Ronald Reagan in 1984 and Bill Clinton in 1996, the incumbent trailed the challenger at some point in trial-heat polls conducted in the year prior to the election year.

Anyone of the major candidates would have had a shot at beating Bush...in fact will beat Bush...

I am convinced that we could nominate a bicycle pump and we would win....thing is, I don't want to when we had such good candidates....

36. "Electability" involves many important factors
among them: stances on the issues, campaign style, personal style and perceived leadership qualities. The GOP attempted to steer this primary season by declaring that none of our candidates have the "certain something" to connect with voters. I'm glad they've been proven wrong.
