Thompson: Saddam Hussein 'clearly' had WMD

NEWTON, Iowa (CNN) – Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson blamed inadequate intelligence for not sending a larger U.S. invasion force into Iraq, but said he supported the decision to overthrow Saddam Hussein.

"Clearly we did not go in with enough people, with the right strategy," Thompson told reporters after a campaign event in this rural city in central Iowa. "We did not foresee what was happening there. Part of that has to do with the fact that our intelligence capabilities were not what they should have been."

Thompson said it was imperative to remove Hussein from power.

"Saddam Hussein, today, had we not gone in, would be sitting on this power keg and be in control of the whole thing," Thompson predicted. "He would have been the new dictator of that entire region in my estimation. He is–was–a dangerous irrational man who, by this time, would have been well on his way to having the nuclear capability himself."

In remarks delivered earlier in a café, Thompson said Hussein "clearly" had weapons of mass destruction prior to the beginning of the war.

"We can't forget the fact that although at a particular point in time we never found any WMD down there, he clearly had had WMD," Thompson said. "He clearly had had the beginnings of a nuclear program, and in my estimation his intent never did change."

1. Some of what he said is based in reality... the reality of 15+ years ago.
it's clear that Thompson's caveats make the totality of his statement, "Saddam Hussein clearly had WMD when he gassed the Kurds, and he clearly was trying, at one time, many years ago, to get a nuclear weapon made." You know, before the UN inspections regime. Sure. He had WMD then. Sure. His intent probably never did change. (Why wouldn't he want a nuke?) His actual physical possession of these at the time of the invasion is in doubt. His being well on his way to having a nuke here in Oct 2007 is in very great doubt. But the guy's so far over the map, some of what he said was true, at one time.

And they sold him OODLES of biological and chemical agents .....

That would be Reagan, Bush, Cheney AND Rumsfeld (He of the infamous 'Handshake' picture)

Saddam was a BushBot STOOGE .... a GOOD friend of the REPUBLICANS in the good old days ....

Hell: Osama was too, come to think of it ....

when they said, "See...there's the infamous WMD"...as they point to those degraded shells from the Iran-Iraq war. Someone said the shit under our kitchen sink was more toxic than the contents.

6. Exactly, 100% correct.
Frankly I'd agree that some of the stuff under our kitchen sinks is more toxic. (At present, anyway.)
